This thread; www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=88416If there turns out to be no obvious reason, can someone suggest possible burning/smouldering of lining behind the stove. Rule out obvious answers first though. Only posted as I ignored something similar - £90k and a lot of heartache later I learnt my lesson.

Having posted on that thread , i believe the culprit to be storing the ash bucket inside the boat. I do stand to be corrected though.
ETA. I also think they have a crack in the stove glass which wont help.

I wonder if the 'acrid' smell was his carpet burning!

A build up of crud in the flue pipe (sticking to the sides). Damp weather can loosen this and depending on the stove it will drop either into the fire or onto a baffle plate at the bottom of the flue.
If it drops onto the baffle plate it can totally block the flue and result in the fire exhausting into the boat through any channels available like gaps between doors or poorly sealed joints.
I had this with one of my stoves last year. CO alarms went off and there was a bad sulphur smell as well. Easy enough to clean the junk out on that particular stove but on some the area above the baffle plate can be very difficult to get at.
