This group was the previous darling of the government, and the opposition. Now we have JAM. 'Just about managing'. Described as: 'Families who are just about managing to get through the week or month'
Now then: I thought Britain was populated by people. Some prosper, some struggle. Some are somewhere around the middle. Some are gay, most are straight. Some aren't quite sure. Some choose to have one child, some choose to have lots. Some have one, or many, by mistake. Others don't have any, either because they don't want to, or they feel that it's a responsible thing to do. Others, unfortunately, really want some, but are unable to.
It's probably reasonable to describe a family as being more than one generation that lives together. Social services concern themselves with families; it's probably fair to assume that they wouldn't get involved in a violent dispute between girlfriend and boyfriend (police job) whereas if a child was involved they would be very keen.
Having established that a family is people living with children: a significant number of people, perhaps a majority, do not fit into this category. Certainly, I'm sure, the majority of voting age people are not this group. Older parents, pensioners, young couples, single people.
I'm wondering why the word 'family' is used so much by politicians. Families don't vote, people do.
Any thoughts?

So do agree with this, it would seem that the only people who matter are those that are members of a family, the reality is that families are often better of than people such as myself. We are retired and Chris suddenly found she has to wait over 4 1/2 years before she gets her pension because the government moved the goal posts. So we have to rely on my pension and in almost 8 years I have not had any increase in my income. This is because when I first retired they awarded me Pension Credit, however each time my pension went up they reduced my Pension Credit by the same amount so have been standing still for the past 8 years. Families may have it tough but so have we but families have the benefit of supermarkets helping out with family packs which are far too big for us. Phil

I would end up looking like my avatar. sorry for the rant Just to get back on subject ..............I agree with nearly all the above ..........................

Ricco, the law of averages says with 180 notches you should have hit the jackpot once. Are you a Jaffa? You do well to remember the kids of today are the future health care workers that will wipe your arse for you when you have no one else around to do it for you For me, we get £82 a month child support. Our nursery fees are usually £800 a month. We do OK, but to paint a picture that every family is massively supported by the government is bollocks. Our next leg up will be when she is 3 in the April; we will get 15 hours nursery funded, rising to 30 hours in the September. That will make a huge difference and is probably one of the very few policies this government will have implemented that I will directly benefit from.

That will make a huge difference and is probably one of the very few policies this government will have implemented that I will directly benefit from. My post was more about the language used by politicians, which appears to place the value and virtue of 'families' above other groups, rather than the benefits structure. Personally I never wanted kids. I believe, in a world that will implode because of unsustainable population growth, it's a responsible thing to do. That's not to say that I think I'm better than people who choose differently, I don't. I think it's wrong to elevate one group of people above others particularly, somewhat ironically, when 'equality' appears to be so important. As for someone wiping my arse when I'm no longer capable: I don't believe reproducing in unsustainable numbers is the answer to this. Baby boomers like me should realise that there are tough times ahead so if they've got any sense, they'll think about taking a step or two to mitigate any problems. Not every single decision made has to be made by the government on our behalf eh? As for the sexual reference you made perhaps it's fair to say that baby boomers shouldn't rely on the destruction of open space and inevitable collapse of the planet in order that their arse is clean. They probably need to take it up the arse instead. As I said though, there's time to think about these things...

OK so there are too many people. Yes.
What about just withdrawing medical support for old fuckers? Too old to work what's the use of these people? They clog up a lot of housing resources (including owning more than one house which should be illegal). Or maybe just kill anyone who reaches the age of 70 or something just to get them out of the way for new generations.
Maybe I am biased - my mum killed herself at age 71 (look on the bright side - one less miserable old geriatric ) and my dad who is nearly 80 is a waste of oxygen !!
People say the problem is to do with new humans being generated but if you think about it the old non productive ones are the problem .
A person who does not provide economic benefit (except to themselves), is a drain on resources (healthcare) and housing and is also not capable of producing new humans to help the race survive (if that's the aim).
For fucks sake stop moaning about people having children !!

Just putting another angle on it. Obviously its not something which would ever happen but there isn't just one reason for the overpopulation "problem" Anyway humans adapt that's what they are best at so it will all work itself out in the end

Why not just have it made legal for a year to "kill anyone you don't like"? That'll get the population down to around 10% of the present level.
Who says it's all about productivity? What are we producing and for whom? Life is for living and enjoying!
Nothing wrong with having two or more houses if everyone is already comfortably and affordably housed.
7 billion is the world's human population now I believe.
The only reason there is poverty and pollution is down to greed. Oh, your neighbours have plonked a new BMW on their drive to show off, have they?
