Thunderboat does have its slow periods but then all of a sudden there's a huge fuss and all kinds of interesting things come up. Rather unpredictable. I would imagine by now, however, if someone stumbled across this site and just wanted a good read, it would take them days to read all the stuff all the way back to last April, and they would come across some gems. Also, looking back, as has been said once in a while, the self-moderation has seemed to work pretty well. This is sort of the little country pub called 'The Wheatsheaf' with weather-worn faced folk sitting by the fireplace, pipe in hand, Real Ale on table, telling yarns and porkies; as opposed to CWDF which is more of a Wetherspoons called 'The Duke of Wellington' with its Fosters lager-drinking clientele being those wearing caps saying 'Captain' as found in the shop at Braunston Marina. Australian piss made in Burton-upon-Trent for the bland Adnams Grumpy Bastard for liveaboard gits who know how to live!

Gin and tonic, surely! No-one drinks fosters any more!

I'm not quite sure how this forum expects to expand it's user base if every time somebody states something and somebody disagrees they just get ridiculed for it even though the response is actually factually 100% correct. CRT is categorically not a private company in the generally accepted sense of the word and in a legal/commercial sense. It has no 'owners' and it has no shareholders. The 'friends' it has have no right to benefit financially from any success CRT has, they are net contributors nothing else. I can see the appeal for some where somebody posts something and everybody nods sagely in agreement and everybody posts 'well said 'you're right' etc etc but frankly what is the point in that?, you might as well either talk to yourself or create a load of sock puppets to interact with each other back slapping. However if people just stopped for a sec. and read a post properly they might actually ruddy learn something sometimes. Edit - forgot to add - yes asset stripping is a concern because once you have asset stripped everything you are screwed and end up shutting navigations down to save money or you look to boaters to stump up a (massive) increase in licence fees or both. I cant see the govt.remotely interested in putting taxes into what is essentially a leisure activity nowadays given their austerity program. It will be well down their priorities. So when all the valuable property has gone it will be crunch time for the Trust. I don't think they (some of the original members) WANT the user base to expand. They just want to have a little monoculture club where they can all sit round wailing and moaning about how unfair things are, and dis CRT. They certainly don't want that enjoyment spoilt by anything so obnoxious as the truth, or being asked to justify their position. Home alone again nick? No one to play with?

Seems you are bored again Martin and want to stir up something from nothing as usual.

"I don't think they (some of the original members) WANT the user base to expand. They certainly don't want that enjoyment spoilt by anything so obnoxious as the truth, or being asked to justify their position." Put an 's' into 'diss' for ya! (for the thickos that didn't learn how to spell it at proper school ) I'm expecting Thunderboat to surge forwards after the New Year. There is something captivating and addictive about it. I don't think anyone wants this to be an exclusive clique like the Wrigglefingers Club - as you've seen yourself, new members have been welcomed most warmly. It could well be that if the member ship expands, then the whole tone of the place could change, but there are no rules against that! There's a lot of tolerance here, the only limits are your imagination! You, yourself, Nick, have contributed handsomely to this site, I'd imagine you'd give it a few more months to see what happens. In the future it could well be that requests for help, and current info about stoppages and problems come to the fore, and that this site will be seen as a place to go to when you're in need of friendly advice and practical aid. Yes, there is the group of people who have been here since the start, but I don't know of anyone of those who have been throwing their weight about and been bullying anyone. Even the more timid members have become more broad-minded and dared to give others a poke in the ribs a bit, it's nice to see people flourish and not be shamed into just shutting up to please all-knowing gits. Very well put naughtyfox. It takes all sorts to make up a good forum and this one certainly benefits from the variety! It is grown up enough to self regulate members without the need to refer to teacher. So far nothing has put me off viewing, although being a newbie I find it hard to contribute as in most cases want I want to say has already been said.

Err no, dis as in disrespect, for those thickos that didn't do yoofspeak at proper school. Not Diss as in the slightly dull flatland town.

Personally I don't care for the point scoring games people play on forums. I'm concerned about the future of the waterways, because of the current Crt regimes asset stripping policy. This forum is a platform that we have to discuss this, hence the discussion. I find it interesting that the people who seem to be concerned most are the ones who live on the water.

I think you're right to a degree but stereotyping is a dangerous thing as it demotivates those who do care but don't live on the water. There are quite a few of those and we might need their support when the shit hits the fan.

Neither do I particularly (care about silly point scoring), although it's a bit rich when you ask a technical sort of question ("is CRT a private company"), I give an honest and reasoned argument, and in return I just get abuse from you. i don't have an overview of the extent of CRT asset stripping, if it exists, so why not start a conversation about that if it troubles you. But you'll need to provide more than hearsay before I become concerned. In particular, I don't understand how selling off the land assets in some way jeopardises the future of the canals for navigation or living on. It is merely indicative of government underfunding which surely isn't CRT's fault. Yes it is a bit worrying what will happen in terms of a funding hole when all the "family silver" is gone but what should CRT do to balance their books in the short term. Cut down on maintenance, raise licence fees, or what?

Including walkers and cyclists, I just find it interesting the way different people view the situation.

CaRT is a private limited company permitted to leave off the ‘Ltd’ from their name. wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk//compdetails Name & Registered Office: CANAL & RIVER TRUST FIRST FLOOR NORTH STATION HOUSE 500 ELDER GATE MILTON KEYNES MK9 1BB Company No. 07807276 Status: Active Date of Incorporation: 12/10/2011 Country of Origin: United Kingdom Company Type: PRI/LBG/NSC (Private, Limited by guarantee, no share capital, use of 'Limited' exemption) Nature of Business (SIC): 36000 - Water collection, treatment and supply 52220 - Service activities incidental to water transportation 91020 - Museums activities 91030 - Operation of historical sites and buildings and similar visitor attractions As to the assets, these are effectively divided into investment assets under CaRT’s sole control, and the essential BW infrastructure which is placed in trust as a national asset, which CaRT have the responsibility of managing. If CaRT the limited company was to be declared officially insolvent and placed into liquidation, the national assets would be turned over to a new body to manage. These “protected” assets which belong to the nation [nominally] are not supposed to be disposable by CaRT, except by consent of the Secretary of State. Sadly, as Jenlyn has observed, there has been no difficulty encountered by Parry in seeking such consents, and we do not know how much of the “track” has been sold off so far.
