It is a fascinating place to visit, been a couple of times. On the one hand one can understand that, due to the tiny geography (West Bank wall is literally just down the road from central Jerusalem, I think bethehem is something like 4 miles from the town centre) they are nervous about rockets coming in from the Palestinian Territories etc, and there is lots of internal strife (the "normal" population despise the Hasidic (ultra orthodox) Jews), and the Yad Vashem (holocaust) museum is pretty horrific.
BUT on the other hand, a quick visit to said Yad Vashem museum brings the point home that they are doing to the Palestinians EXACTLY what the Nazis did to them. Do they never learn?
But I suppose that ultimately, should we judge the Israeli nation by the actions of their politicians? Let's hope the rest of the world doesn't judge us likewise!

I was surprised to see the USA abstaining, normally they back anything Israel does and Israel has for decades been near the top of the list for US foreign aid. I won't say any more because any criticism of Israeli policy in Palestine is always seized on by somebody as "anti-semitism".

I don't know about Thunderboat, but I do know it is considered by many to be politically incorrect to make any criticism of Israeli policy on Palestine. I have read many comments responding to critics of Israeli foreign policy elsewhere on the internet which have not risen far above "so you agree with the gas chambers at Auschwitz?" I'm sure we all have.

It doesn't excuse Israel and its policies. In my lifetime, I've never seen Israel at peace. I've always considered Israel to be a warmongering nation. Their ignorance, selfishness and greed seems to have no moral boundaries.

It's been a while since I was at school, can someone remind me about when we were guilty of getting in on the action.
I remember that the crusades were about retaking the holy lands from the clutches of Islam but we're we attacking Israel or were we getting it back for them.

But I think you have to be careful to distinguish between the face of Israel as presented by their politicians and the media, and the face of the actual people most of which are perfectly pleasant and in fact more so than the average Brit. Tel Aviv is a great place to visit for its libertarian attitude, Jerusalem for its condensed "bible in a few square miles" and cultural /racial/religious mix etc. Yes you can condemn the people since it is they who choose their politicians, but perhaps we should consider our own politicians first!
