The access into the centre cockpit of an Ormelite is quite good, the only fixed top bar is on the centre line of the boat. With the hatch slid back there is no "top" bar on the opening. The aft access is slightly less easy but still reasonable. The interiors, although a bit dated in style are excellent examples of compact but efficient layout.
As regards "the rough and tumble" of the canals mine has had about 45 years of it and is still looking respectable
(In my ownership she has done about 1200 miles ... Trent, Chesterfield, Fossdyke, Sheffield and South Yorkshire, Aire & Calder, L&L, Bridgewater, Weaver, Trent and Mersey, Soar, GU, Tidal Thames, Gt Ouse and tributaries) She has a lot of plaques screwed up for the Warwickshire ring, Shroppie, etc. etc.
GRP boats particularly some of the older ones were very heavily built and well protected, Ormelites have teak rubbing bands with steel capping

God only knows what the guys at Weston were thinking when they signed that off!
The idea of two separate cabins appeals, the loss of the party deck doesn't though!
My mmum's old H&L cruiser stern narrow boat had a huge rear deck, yes there was a lot of sacrificed cabin space but it was a world away from the antisocial 'trad' stern and way more useful than the major compromise that is a semi trad.

My old mans first boat was a trailable Microplus cruiser like this Had a 5hp Evinrude that used to overheat when idling. He then upgraded to a Europa 18 But his final boat and favourite was a Dawncraft Dandy....he even upgraded his outboard for a Honda 7hp

That Europa 18 is not a displeasing shape.
Dawncraft Dandy ...... is that the one with a cathedral hull ? Never had any personal experience with them but have heard good things from those who have

Myself and a couple of mates used to use it for several boozy trips

Firstly not mine !!! I am a member of an almost totally moribund Ormelite owners site (moribund due to the owner having personal problems) There is one of the members who is trying to sell "Lyin'Lo" preferably to someone who wants an Ormelite rather than just any GRP cruiser. I have no idea how much he wants but if you know anyone who is after one of these (quite rare) boats give me a PM and I'll pass on his email address

Greetings all
apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I'm on the lookout for an Ormelite or a Creighton and google threw this bit of the internet at me.
John long shot this but are you in touch with any Ormelite owners via that defunct forum who might be looking to sell?

Hello. Re reading this thread I noticed I commented about the high gunnels and poor access on a Dawncraft. What did I see just now on a canalside walk but a dc25 with a cut out in the gunnels to help with the access. Swmbo "that would have saved us £12k!" Nah, I'm glad I resurrected an old hull and made a tidy boat out of it.

The one I mentioned in the other thread boats-from.co.uk/not-specified/ormelite-25-cabin-cruiser-171084and Chantal Lorraine www.apolloduck.co.uk/boats/ormeliteGood luck with the hunt ...... any information you need about them ask myself or Gazza (if it's a grown up technical question make that Gazza )

Quality choice of boat 🚢🍻👍 I know the inner workings of Northern Star almost as well as Fairlight. The drawings and BOM for the steering gear conversion are now backed up with Mr Google, a bit more high tech than a few scraps of paper and some crumpled fag packet drawings jammed in the back of a filling cabinet at work
