Scotrail profits would pay for proposed £3m compensation three times over says RMT Union Following recent Scotrail claims that they don’t know how they will be able to pay for the £3 million scheme of a free week for passengers with monthly and annual passes proposed by the Scottish government, new research by rail union RMT has found that Scotrail retained profits could pay for the cost three times over. Most recent retained profits were £9.1m. An amount that the union said could also be used to fund a year on year 3.8% fare cut if the service was nationalised as soon as possible The latest available company returns (31 December 2015) for Abellio Scotrail Ltd show that: • Operating profit was £12.9 • Turnover was £485.7m (including revenue grant from Transport Scotland of £219.8m) • Passenger Income was £240.3m • Profit after tax was £9.5m • Retained profits of £9.1m Mick Cash, RMT General Secretary, said: "These figures show that Scotrail can easily afford to fund the compensation scheme, but more importantly Dutch owned Scotrail are taking the equivalent of a £1000 an hour out of Scottish railways that could otherwise be used to reduce fares. “Passengers cannot afford to wait any longer and the Scottish government should take steps to bring the service back into public ownership as soon as possible." So 4% of the revenue grant is ending up in Mr Scotrail's pocket. Doesn't sound tooo bad. Or 1.9% of turnover. Any business needs to make a bit of profit, something the unions in Germany understand but the RMT doesn't. Does Mick Cash work for free? Doubt it...

I pretty much agree with you - one of the problems in franchising at the moment is attracting enough bidders due to the risk v profit decision. The main point of the post was to show that we do need versions of the truth/facts/statistics from all sides - otherwise we have nothing sensible to form our opinions on. If everyone resorts to fake facts and lies, how do we come to our own opinion. I'm no fan of the establishment but the least I hope for is that they try to put their views across in a way that I can judge them by looking at alternative views.

Can we see Mick Cash's bank account statements, please? I agree with the principle of unions, but union leaders are usually 100% corrupt. And what about unions who invest their money (stocks & shares) in companies that, for instance, use child labour? Or have appalling working conditions?

No idea about some of your questions (I've not been a union member for over 30 yrs). However, what do you think of this fight that the RMT are currently fighting; MARITIME UNION RMT is holding a demonstration today over poverty pay on Scotland’s only roll-on roll-off freight link to Europe.
The Lithuanian-registered Finlandia Seaways, DFDS freight service operates between Rosyth and Zeebrugge in Belgium, employ Lithuanian seafarers on the vessel on rates of pay as low as £1.64 per hour in 2015, well below the National Living Wage of £7.20 per hour.
My understanding is that the service is being funded by the Scottish 'Government' and largely by the EU. £1.64 an Hour - FFS!

The BBC do their best for the establishment, limiting their précis to "a dispute over who shuts the doors" neglecting to mention lost jobs, safety etc.

To lollygagger's comment: I would dump those Lithuanians back in their own country, drop barrel-loads of stagnant urine all over Brussels from airplanes, prosecute Finlandia Seaways' bosses for this scam (25 years in prison per boss), and get the service running with employees who are paid properly and whom have decent conditions in which to work in. Curses to all Eastern Europeans who are dropping in everywhere, snatching up jobs, doing them for half-price, and doing them badly. I blame Bob Geldof. I would also pour barrel-loads of stagnant urine over the Lithuanian Parliament building for allowing this to happen in the first place. You forgot Scotland in your rant - homeplace of Trump!

Well, my mum's snuffit so no worries there, but when I visited my sister just after Xmas and used her computer to add some more ramblings to Thunderboat, I saw she already had a user name and password and was ready to Log In to Thunderboat on one of her windows. I feel she may be stalking me.
Personally I'd do something more worthwhile, like walking the Pennine Way. Or visiting every pub in Britain which is over 400 years old.

I feel she may be stalking me. I'm not stalking you. I find our exchanges slightly amusing and informative, if you and others don't then I'll happily stop replying to you.

I have to admit I'm confused here. I've just looked at the members list and see 'forumidiot' has vanished entirely. I cannot help thinking 'andy' is forumidiot. And then there is 'andyberg'.
I could go through all of their posts this weekend and try and work out who is who and what the whole situation is, but it probably isn't worth it, so am content to let 'andy' stalk me.
I had never really thought about canals and boating in my earlier life, and have not been a part of Internet forums, so this is all quite interesting, rarely a dull moment.
Now I've finished reading Bill Bryson's latest book 'The Road to Little Dribbling'. From it I found this relevant to ´Thunderboat:
"Among the genetic gifts the Neanderthals passed on to us, it seems, is ginger hair, bless them."

"Among the genetic gifts the Neanderthals passed on to us, it seems, is ginger hair, bless them." I may have suffered through genetic 'gifts' but at least I don't have ginger hair! Posted with sincere apologies to our strawberry blond haired person and some of my family!
