I saw a massive fatberg in the cut the other day. It was about 3 feet long and almost a foot across. I was in the dinghy with the children. It was one of the very cold days with ice about. I poked with with one of the oars. It was hard.
I've seen small fat bergs and I am pretty sure that's what it was but this one was a beast !

No it doesn't bother me, as well as dwelling in a house I occasionally dwell in a boat and a caravan, both with cassette bogs, which I dispose of down the plumbing with aplomb. I've also cleaned up a few leaky drains in my time. So what exactly is your problem, other than being a mardy arsed, lilly livered wuss, probably a southerner (certainly demonstrate soft tendencies) oh, and best not forget, an utter twat! I recall I have in the past, claimed you are a girl, that would explain a lot! (sorry girls!) S'cuse me...... I don't feel any affinity with Tomsk as a representative of my gender...... I've delved down cess pits..cut fat from blocked pipes(Molly appreciated that 'doggy delicacy')...unblocked toilets and shovelled shit in my professional life(nurse working in bowel and bladder wards)..ohh and cleared 20 years of ankle deep rat excrement from old barns... so how Tomsk's obsession with workings of Kris's composting habits be 'girlish' I fail to understand π soz Patty, I was expecting righteous castigation, rightfully so. I did apologise though.

Perhaps, but my home remains free of faecal deposits and shall remain so. Tomsk! Tomsk! Tomsk! What a cock womble womble womble you are! Remember! I recall I have in the past, claimed you are a girl, that would explain a lot! (sorry girls!) To be absolutely clear yet again. I have no issues with composting toilets, they are wonderful, planet saving things. I maintain they have no place on a small craft UNLESS one moors in a marina/EOG or similar which has facilities bankside for such activities. I believe we are agreed that it takes anywhere from 6 months (dubious) to a year (realistic) for the average box of shit to compost fully to the stage where it is legally disposable/spreadable (but then only on your own land and not near a watercourse). I also recall that it takes one man 2 weeks to fill the average sized box with shite. I would welcome correction on these points if I have misunderstood. Last time I checked a Year consisted of 52 weeks or 26 boxes of shite, that require storage. Am I missing something here? Where is a CC'er going to store 26 boxes of bubbling shite for a year (or even 13 boxes of putrid poo, if indeed the shite cartons only take 6 months to come to fruition)? It is not a tenable process. I maintain that the containers of ass produce will end up dumped under a hedge/in a canal/down an elsan well before the wonderful fragrant compost stage. In which case what's the point. I also think that anyone who undertakes such activities as a CC'er should have their head read as a matter of urgency. Again, am I missing something here?

An outside loo in Finland: That is a much nicer looking outside loo than the ones I used in Finland where we sat on polystyrene seats and hmm deposited waste products of our GI system into bin bags and sprinkled with saw dust....I presume these were composting toilets as I saw black bin bags stacked similar to silage bags here in gud ole GB land.

Years ago I was in New Mexico near the confluence of the Red River and the Rio Grande (an aunt lived in Santa Fe) and had reason to make an approach towards one of these outdoor toilet arrangements. The godawful stench made it impossible to get anywhere near the shed. I can't help thinking as it was not exactly a populated area it would have made more sense for people to just crap wherever they want (using common sense and green toilet roll of course) and let nature sort it rather than storing it in a fixed location. There was no vehicle access. Maybe they had a helicopter shitpump.
For cruising boats my preference is an elsan. Its not exactly an arduous procedure to empty it when required.
I suspect composting toilets are more of a money spinning device than anything.
In France apparently most shit from boats goes straight into the canal. Their canals are bigger though to be fair.
I do like the idea of an incinerator type system

Erudite r us. By heck lad, you must've had to go for a lie down after that, a marathon after normally just walking to the park with nurse. Not just four but Hundreds of letters in a post. Well done, keep it up. There is sense in your reasoned debate, so I wonder if we could have a reasoned, evidenced response from Kris, pics of the boxes showing how its working, the state of decomposition, tomatoes or other, perhaps aromatic, herbs, growing in the final product.

How is it going, in practice, now that you have been using it for a few months?

I have to say, that Tomsk's post very succinctly states my prejudice against composting loos on a boat, without even mentioning having to seperate urine and disposal of that.
In my view it is a well considered and very clear statement of arguments against.
I would be interested to read what the pro camp has to say in rebuttal.

For all the "curious" people that seem to be so interested in compost loo's, it's ever so easy to get onto a Facebook page where there's lots of interesting information about them, and also what sort of expΓ©riences users have, and what they think about them. www.facebook.com/groups/compostingloos/?ref=bookmarksPeter.
