If...I cut the main stem, overlapped the parts and bolted it together pointing at about 45° upwards, does the team think it would still work?

I've never played with one so don't know. To take this slightly off topic but similar I have been wondering about constructing a TEG generator system which would run off the stove. They are commercially available but £300+ for a 1amp 12vdc generator is a bit steep!
Would be nice to be able to charge up from the fire. Perhaps a separate battery just for phone and lights for example.

You would need to ensure that there is good thermal transfer between the two parts. Use some heatsink compound on the joint.

My fan is quite good really, but it moves "the wrong air". I'd like to strap it to the flue at the top, but it's the wrong shape and quite a bit cooler that the stove top so I thought maybe aim it upwards.

In the end I left the fins and generator clamped between as it was and made a bodgy bracket to mount the motor pointing up at about 30-40 degs. I have to say it now blows the warm air down the boat far better, the warmest air being at ceiling height.
