I find it strange that the market doesn't have a monitor that does it all. Surely in this day and age it must be possible for some sort of gadget to work out the actual capacity of a battery based on voltage and discharged ah. Smartguage have another gauge that does that I believe. Sit down to read the price.

Disconnect everything from batteries, attach gadget that automatically charges batteries, waits for them to settle down, measures voltage, puts a known constant load on for a known time, waits, measures again and bingo. Yes I could do I could do all that myself long hand. Bugger lol.

Seriously though, I don't have much faith in my own working out for the true capacity of my battery and as all the other numbers are based on this, it could be the reason one went u/s.

I prefer the BMV but i am aware that it can tell lies and basically use just the volt and amp meters. Which one is best comes down to whether one is interested enough in the electrical system to learn to interpret the BMV. If one just wants a gauge to tell you when to start charging then the Smartguage will be OK but be aware that it too tells lies especially when charging on solar. The ultimate system would use a Smartguage to monitor the discharge and a volt and ammeter to monitor the charge. I believe such a thing exists but at a price that put it out of reach of the average boater.
