... I guess some people must just go round cleaning. Yes. I think they have a technical word for that. Women Yes, that's why there has never been a woman on the moon. It doesn't need cleaning yet.

That's a good point. Not sure women are allowed in mosques. My other half has fairly devout Muslim parents (Moroccan) but she is French born and although technically a muslim she is not practising and has a very dim view of most of their belief system. She is an excellent cleaner. I have not actually been to a mosque so I don't know who does the cleaning.
I known there are some dubious practices around women in Islam (like hiding faces and other horribly offensive things) but I wouldn't be surprised if you were right about men doing the cleaning.

I dont go in churches, why would I want to go in a Mosque. If visiting a johnny foreigner country one might visit a big church such as Notre Dame or the big Mosque in Jerusalem but not just for the sake of showing how Liberal you are and "oo look at me, I'm intergrating with the Muslems to show you all how unbiased I am to them"
FFS I do that every day at work with my Muslem colleagues as they do with me. We dont need to parade around each others religious buildings to intergrate.

My other half has fairly devout Muslim parents (Moroccan) but she is French born and although technically a muslim she is not practising and has a very dim view of most of their belief system. Richard Dawkins ('The God Delusion') considers that describing a child as Christian, or Muslim, or whatever, is tantamount to child abuse because the child has not reached the age when it can make its own mind up about its belief system, but has the parents' belief system imposed on it as a default position. I can see his point. Most British would describe themselves as 'Christian' when filling in a form (for example at Dubai Airport Arrivals) because it's traditional, but how many of them are Christians in their heart? It's just the line of least hassle and resistance. When I worked in Turkey I had a 35 year-old Turkish colleague who had fallen out with her Dad big time when he re-discovered his faith and insisted that the rest of the family follow suit. She was like most Turks - basically secular in their everyday lives, possibly following some of the traditions during Ramadan, the way we might at Christmas.

The mosque I went in had a long cordoned off area upstairs for the women to pray...the guide said it was so all could be together to gossip but I didn't really buy that , it looked awfully plain and dark but we were not allowed to go up there....the majority of the space was for men..it was huge. I like to look around different churches and other buildings, find the amazing sculptures and stained glass beautiful..dont believe in taking photos though, tis enough just to see.
