You're right Patty, I seem to recall it was £12 each, plus an extra fee to visit additional areas.
We visited Chester Cathedral and did their 'High up' tour. It was well worth the fee to see around in the roof areas. The craftmanship in wood and stone is breath taking. And strangely the very people whose hands made the place would have been looked down upon and considered unworthy .
I love looking around for pagan symbols in churches, little jokes by the craftsmen I guess. In Nantwich Church, which is beautiful, there are a number of 'Green Man' carvings. Symbols of death and resurection beliefs that pre date christian adoption of customs.
There is also a carving, said to be of the stone masons landlady, who was allegedly caught stealing. They got their revenge by their public depiction according to local stories.
They are wonderful pockets of social history, whatever one's belief system.

Ely cathedral is OK in a quaint sort of a way, but if you want to be bowled over, Lincoln cathedral makes it seem half-hearted.

I do like Lincoln Cathedral..oh and Peterborough.. If fact love old buildings..Fountains abbey is great for ruins and it had this amazing zoetrope in the banqueting house which was a satire on the excesses of that era..I stood watching it spin over and over again. The old Hardwick hall has a staircase running up the middle and the rest is ruins..its quite scary to go up to the top. The hall that was built to replace it is kinda very interesting. oops im wafflin
