I'm contemplating a small wind turbine. I had wind turbines years ago and found them moderately satisfactory. This was before all these new ones turned up.
One comment I had from another boater about small wind turbines is that "they ain't worth a wank" and he may have had a point but I do sometimes wonder.
My best wind experience was a winter on the western k&a in 2000/2001 (specially around Devizes). Its windy down there which helps.
I quite like the idea of a vertical axis wind turbine but not sure if any decent ones are available at sensible prices.

Some of them are pretty quiet such as the rather dubiously named "silentwind"

I have one. I don't bother putting it up during the summer as my 375w of solar more than provides all the power I need. Come October I assemble it. It lives on an aluminium scaffold pole with fittings welded to the hand rail at the back of the cruiser deck.
You need to be moored in the right spots to get much out of it. If there are trees around these deflect the wind rendering it pretty useless. In the right spots though it delivers a couple of amps when there's a fresh breeze.
In terms of cost and returns it's a no brainer, don't bother! Personally though I like them, wouldn't be without mine.

The turbine I had in 2000 was an aero gen 6. Big one I bought secondhand . I regularly saw over 15 amps out of it into 12v. I got fed up of folding it for bridges. In the last 10 years some lighter units with more advanced electronics have come out but I'm not sure if they are any better.
2 amps must be a very small unit?

Mine is a Rutland. The blurb with it suggests it should put out more, up to 25amps. The most I've seen it produce is 5 amps, that was during a gale. I think there may be something going on with the wiring but haven't got round to looking into it.

I got 2 rutlands 913's wired together into one regulator. one day seen a big flash in boat lol .It was the 20amp fuse blown in regulator panic panic.yes but it was gale forse winds.must say my turbines have been brilliant and kept me going in winter Wen theres been no sun for months like 2014/13 floods .People say turbines vibrate your boat. Mine don't and I'm on a small cruiser.only time I've felt vibrating is wen the bearings are going and you will definitely know about that. but that's sorted now. oh and if they ever free wheel (meaning if a wire comes off battery terminal they are very noisy but thats a wind noise panic panic simple to mend. stop turbine first.reconnect cable to battery

If the boat was bigger I'd have more turbines spinning and solar sunning. By the way at my moorings which enforcement twat said I've never used Attachments:

Apparently the new Rutland 900 series (914) has an mppt controller and 30% more output (in theory).
I had a Rutland 910 about 20 years ago but I found the bearings went really quickly leading to excessive droning. I think its because the rotor is heavy which puts a lot of load on the bearings. They may have sorted that by now.

If that mppt controller/regulator is cheap might as well put it on cheap turbine too boost 30% output power of cheap turbine to batteries.oh I can blow more fuses up lol
