This copper looks very tempted to become a National Hero... "I could always say it went off accidentally"

Perhaps he had me pigeon holed. Many do. My Grandad, once he could see my parents were doing ok and his wife had died spent the next 15 years gradually giving all his money to charities. It was quite a sum. He'd always given a lot but by the end he was giving away most of his pension too and living on beans. He was entirely sane, not pulled in by chuggers and TV adds, it had always been his intention. Oxfam got a good chunk of it. In the war he made the bombs nobody had seen before safe and after wrote for the Guardian among other things. I like to think some of his humanity has rubbed off on me.

Peter..........your club? How very P G Woodhouse, I love it. I always wanted to live in a gentleman's country residence, have a 'gentleman's gentleman' and visit 'my club' in town. Do they know you're from Rotherham my friend he he Rog Oops, due to patrimony, I'm a Freeman of one of the 110 City of London liveried companies. We have a club on Gresham Street but I've never been there. My Bro is one of the head honchos, they get a say in who the mayor, sheriff etc are. Special handshakes wink wink. I don't and have never approved of this sort of inherited power however marginal so I don't join in. To be fair, their only real purpose nowadays is administering Β£millions of charitable funds under their control which they manage to do at virtually zero cost, and to look out for any widows or orphans of other members. Most money goes to help destitute and homeless in London. Maybe they should buy some boats. answered by this post

Oh John Smith, why did you have to die? your death gave the odious Blair the chance to lead Britain and become a pain in the arse on the wold stage after he'd cause almost irrevocable damage to a once great country. RIP John Smith, the greatest Prime Minister this country never had I always thought John Smith was one of the good guys. His party was not mine, but he came across as a man who was fair, listened to others & was a proper politician.

I think lollygagger was just pointing out his experience, by way of saying you don't have to be Bertie Wooster to have a club.
