Thats interesting. My mother died about 18 months ago and the solicitors are still making money out if it because property has not sold yet. Solicitors fees will be about £6k or something stupid, for a total estate value of about £300k (flat+investments) Totally ridiculous ! I will look into making a will. I know life can end before you expect it to for one reason or another so probably best to sort it out on paper to help out those left behind and hopefully save them some money. Don't get me started on solicitors and probate! it takes a long time with them to justify the fees and they charge a % (usually) of the estate regardless of the amount of work needed. When my dad died he left a will, despite that i ended up doing lot of the leg work and the solicitor 'muddled' his estate with anothers and set to pay ££'s to Mr Tax man based on a gift given by the other set of figures....luckily we twigged in time.

If you do make a will, be sure someone you trust knows where it is and which solicitor. When my mother's cousin died, a bunch of relations nobody had heard of steamed in, grabbed everything they could, probably nicked the copy from his desk and that was that. He and my mum were only children and had been like brother and sister all their lives. Not that she needed the money but it was upsetting finding these disinterested wasters grabbing the lion's share through some kind of right. Still have no idea who the fuck they were tbh.

I'm sorry if I'm coming across as Mrs Know it All about wills, but it is my day job! if you want to ensure your will wont get lost it's a good idea to store it securely, a service we offer our clients, it's stored in a proper doucument storage facility, NOT in a back room somewhere! We also register the wills on the National Will Register FOC, you can do this yourself here: www.nationalwillregister.co.uk/willregister/willregister.aspxthis will cost you £30, but it is the first place someone like us or a solicitor will tell you to look.

Something he didn't do. Chipper one minute dead the next, I guess it wasn't top of his to do list, but we do know he'd written one as he told my mother he'd left her everything. There are an awful lot of solicitors in London.

It makes a change from me blathering on about welding Seriously though, I've learned a fair bit from this thread, particularly some of the stuff you have posted. Every day is a school day.

There are an awful lot of solicitors in London. Again, that's the problem with storing a will at home, if someone finds it and doesn't like its contents it is so easy to "disappear" it! when we deal with dysfunctional families(I could write a book!) we get them to sign a disclaimer if they refuse to take up the storage option because a damaged, defaced or disappeared will isn't worth the paper its written on.

My youngest son has his will sorted....he's only 27 but because he's been in the Marines they had to write one pre active service and then due to this World Challenge he's embarked on, he's ensured everything in order.
