It's a lovely day in the Midlands was wondering when the official boating season start for you? Well for us it never stopped or started. Boating in winter can be one of the best times - if a bit wet and cold outside. We even used to hire in winter, this was us moored at Newbold in Feb 2010, later that year we bought or own boat and continued to boat through out the year until the winter before we sold up. This was us in Oct 2011 on the A&CN - you can see we had had a BBQ the night before!!

There must be a percentage of fair weather boaters along with the hardcore all weather nutter's.

There must be a percentage of fair weather boaters along with the hardcore all weather nutter's. Easter weekend was normally when we used to notice a sharp increase in the number of boats about (a bit like caravanning) - that seems to be the start of any so called 'season' in my experience/

We use our boat all year round, it's nice to get out at weekends over the winter when the weather's dry and it's not too windy.🙂

Use both our boat and caravan all year round, just not often enough.

Cruised from Braunston to Hillmorton this afternoon, passing the new marina being built near the prison (is it going to be called Dunchurch Fields or something similar....don't mention Onley Prison ). Now we noticed whilst in Braunston, how many marina boats popped out to cruise to the winding hole and back on Saturday as well as today. One wonders once this 650 berth marina opens, how busy it's going to get around Braunston. I normally believe that a very large percentage of marina boats rarely come out. But even a small percentage of 650 is quite a lot. Anyway, it was a glorious afternoon after a wet miserable morning, and I love year round cruising too. Rog

I remember the towpath moorings near the prison. Nice and quiet when I was last there (about 12-15 years ago). A 650 berth marina? Wow thats going to change the place !!
Even if it was only 5% of marina boats coming out thats still more than 30 boats ! (Assuming marina is full to capacity)

And the marina, which is vast, is right by those moorings.
I wonder if anyone here is considering moving there?

Thanks for putting the photos up. I can do forums, and I can do photos. Don't ask me to combine the two, that's way above my pay grade. Set off to cruise to Brownsover (laundry, shopping, pubs ) and no sooner untied than three, yes THREE boats appeared heading for the locks. That's more moving boats, at once, than we've seen in a day since new year! Somebody must have blown a whistle, but I never heard it. Beautiful day again. And I saw Boatman moving another boat. He turns up everywhere! Rog

Perhaps it would be wise to buy shares in marinas, as it does seem to be guaranteed income. The canals are certainly the home to lots of floating money. So, from where will 650 boats come from, to fill up that marina? Is the population of England growing so much that people cannot afford land-based houses and are spilling into boats, which are, after all, destined to become rusty skips. Marinas, eh? All that waste coming out of the kitchen sink, and all the dirty shower water... nothing quite like wallowing in it. Cholera, anyone?

The boating season is when all the plebs come out. I hate it. Oi!! you cheeky git!! We lay ours up over the winter, it gives me a chance to catch up on jobs or improve stuff, it means I can protect water systems from frost, my batteries get to go on holiday to warmer climes (work!) And with a little bit of ferkling about we can get out for the odd day trip if the fancy takes us - although not this year having been on the hard for nearly 5 months! We always have a good laying up supper and a fitting out dinner at our club - one marks the start of hard work, the other heralds the chance to enjoy the fruits of that labour. I'm a boater not a pleb

I'm not sure where the figure of 650 boats comes from in the earlier posts in this thread, the figure I saw in the blog I linked to says 200 - which fits in better with the plans/drawings also linked to. But it's still a good few boats. It's a very long time since we boated down that area but I don't recall it being that busy in the area.....and ISTR that Barby Moorings which is not far a way took a long time to fill, if indeed it ever did.
