Have you done any boating on the continent? Thinking mainly France Belgium and Holland but there are other places.
I've been tempted by France as my children and their mum are French but somewhat put off by the commercial nature of the waterways - it doesn't look very relaxing.
And france is full of French people !

And france is full of French people ! You'll get used to them after a couple of decenies, and within probably not al that long, they will be a minority in the country.
Maybe it's good if you don't wait too long if you would really like to go there, as I'm afraid that things are in the process of changing, and not for the better.
Peter.

I've already put up pics of some of our boating adventures in Finland on Thunderboat. I can't believe how people miss out on this - get a boat and away yer go! Lots of islands to camp on, yes you can make a little fire too cook on. It's only 3 hours from Gatwick. Finland is made for boating. And it's still a safe country. Apologies to those who've seen these already: goo.gl/photos/z1dWJZ5w6fXLZaDC7 And sorry, I would have let Thunderboaters (some of 'em) borrow my boat, but I sold it before Christmas.

Go for it. We left the British waterways 16 years ago after 35 years on them. My short fuse couldn't cope with the queuing and the PR men instead of engineers running the system. anyway we brought an old Dutch barge in Belgium and have enjoyed it ever since. The big waterways and large locks are a bit daunting at first but it's not difficult and the commercials are generally accommodating if you act sensibly and don't get in the way. Once in the 38 meter lock system in France you are often on your own and many of the locks are now automatic. There are plenty of mooring places with water and electricity, some are free or a modest charge and the license for my 22 m boat is £430 per year and my mooring 250 for the winter. Difficult to know how things will work out with the currency or wether there will be any entry restrictions imposed on uk citizens but in the meantime we intend to enjoy the boating, climate, food and especially the wine, as well as the other boaters from all over the world who are doing the same thing.
