Apart from Palmer the poisoner's house, in the church yard across the road from his house is the grave of Christina Collins who was murdered by the crew of a narrow boat. Her body was carried up 'the bloody steps' which are by the Trent aqueduct as you leave Rugeley. It was based on this story that Colin Dexter wrote 'The Wench is Dead' a Morse book. Rog A far more intellectually put summary than mine thanks Rog!

Does anybody know...
Is the first convoy of the day through Harecastle Tunnel northbound or southbound? This will be on Sunday. Ta.
Having to re-route slightly as there was no availability for Standedge Tunnel for next Friday, only for the following week, and my boy who is coming up by train this weekend has to be home on the Monday. Prob go do Anderton Boat Lift and then head off clockwise to Skipton.

I looked on t'Internet - no info of opening times for Harecastle Tunnel in 2017. Why does this mean you have to alter your plans, why not do Standedge after next Friday? Why the hurry? There are railway stations and buses the length of the Huddersfield Narrow. You do seem to rush about. Not good for your blood pressure

There are railway stations and buses the length of the Huddersfield Narrow. You do seem to rush about. Not good for your blood pressure Harecastle is open every day now, no booking required. Just don't see the point in turning up as it opens if the first passage of the day is in the opposite direction. There's no availability for Standedge Tunnel next week, and we can't do it the following week as my boy has to be home on the Monday, which was the first slot they had. So I'll re-route to do the Pennine Ring clockwise and do Standedge on the way back.

Language Timothy!
I believe they will send through first the end that has most boats waiting.
I don't think it is organised further than that.

Language moderated (thankyou dogless). I think the turnaround is only 45 minutes anyway, I mean, you could read a book or clean the engine room or empty the stove ash pan whilst waiting...

But as it doesn't seem there's a fixed pattern I will just turn up and see.

If you're heading north, we have stayed at the southern tunnel portal overnight on many occasions (I wouldn't stay overnight at the northern portal).
The tunnel keepers turn up just before 8am, and we've been straight in on each occasion we've done that.
At this time of year, I don't believe you'll be held up much more than an hour either way. Our record for travelling through is 34 mins.
Following another boat it once took us 54 mins.
Watch out for the skeleton (in an alcove).

My lad is getting the train to Stoke and it doesn't get in until 1740 so by the time he meets me I think it will be getting dark, I'm thinking of mooring at Etruria Junction and heading off in the morning. If we have to wait, we will just have to. I'll fill the time by getting him down the weed hatch or something. I doubt he'll fall for the old "Here's a cup, you'll have to empty it out first" routine again though.

Don't forget the clocks change on Saturday, so won't be dark until after 7pm.
Etruria is good, China Gardens is good mooring and the pubs okay for food.
Westport Lake is very pleasant mooring these days, not like in the 1990's.
It takes just over an hour from Etruria to the tunnel portal.
Will you be getting the lad to do the Cheshire locks, or letting him steer?
