Rog. I'm still feckin FUMING though! There's no justice for the common twat any more! I'm still feckin fuming about ours, and it was about ten years ago!!! But the sun rises and sets. I like to think of these kinds of life experiences, as campaign medals, to be discussed and drink shared over as time goes by Rog

Chain? Was it not a belt? Chains are making a bit of a comeback and are not as uncommon as you might think. Mainly because of the perceived failure rates of belts.......

Gear driven crank and push rods for the win!
I had a 1965 beetle a while back. Someone I knew bought a new modern type beetle. I got more mpg. So much for 50 year's progress at the vw factory.

Thinking back, I called the RAC who came and towed me back to my home garage, to abandon the wreck before taking us home. At the time we had two German Shepherds, and they had to squeeze into the cab of the recovery vehicle with us. The driver wasn't very happy. He was less happy half an hour later when he had discovered that he had nothing to fear from being bitten, but that the digestive issues of one of the dogs was prone to cause quite noisy and smelly air in a small enclosed space. And it really was the dog Happy days. Rog

Thanks Cuthound but I don't think this applies to me in this case. The timing chain was working when I bought it. It failed almost 4 months later. I can't see that being accepted as a 'pre-existing' fault. I wish, though. Mrs Loafer feels a bit hard done by, especially as it was her who became stranded in Stafford traffic with everyone hooting angrily at her.

You rightly named the thread Loafer, ..........Definitely a bummer ....... though with the way phrases change there meaning ....... maybe not It might be worth approaching the seller (although not in any great hope) They may be prepared to offer some recompense for "goodwill" or even just to avoid the hassle if they think you might try and take it further

My Poohgo (405 ?) snapped the camshaft in 2 places when that went ...... wasn't too upset, never liked the damn thing that much anyway Heresy! The 405 was a fabulous car. Hateful thing to work on though - there's the right way then there's the French way! A super ride, strong engines, well thought out cabin and the turbo diesel was the first that actually went well and was reasonably refined for an oil burner of its time. In fact, all the mid 80's to late 90's pugs were pretty damn good. They dropped the ball in the 2000's though!

Gear driven cams. Proper job. It's not mine, but it is identical. I haven't got a recent picture close to hand

Just never felt happy with it, sure it was quick but it always felt like sitting in an overstuffed armchair. It was a working estate and the cargo area was not a nice shape. My lads liked it (though I suspect they thrashed the living daylights out of it) ........ I preferred to drive the old twin wheel Transit. I am an Astra fan (last 4 vehicles including a van, present one a now aging diesel estate. All had enormous mileages when I finally parted with them (the van 297,000 with no engine problems ..... it was the ancillaries that died) the lowest mileage was on the petrol Astra saloon about 120,000 but that went after a collision with a dozy bugger doing the school run, the other diesel car was over 250,000 miles and still running fine when it went PX for the present one, which is at about 190,000 (40,000 when I bought it)

It took me nigh on 8 hours to change a heater matrix on mine years ago. I came to the conclusion that the sun is at the centre of our galaxy, but a heater matrix is at the centre of a poojo 405's universe.
