The first Cambelt I had go west on me was in my lovely Rover SD1 2600. Outside lane of the M6 heading north just past Sandbach services. Rolled to a stop on the hard shoulder and got towed to Rochdale by the RAC.
Not worth getting it fixed due to its age so a week later after visiting me folks I drove back to London in an old Datsun Sunny that I bought off an Asian chap for 80 quid who lived round the corner from me dad.

Chain? Was it not a belt? Chains are making a bit of a comeback and are not as uncommon as you might think. Mainly because of the perceived failure rates of belts....... Cam chains are not without there problems VW are having loads of problems bexcuse they have forced the chain manufacturer to increase the life of the stamping equipment to reduce costs. This means if you get a car with a chain stamped just before the stamping equipment is replaced it is likely to fail early. Information here copied from Honest John's Web site. -4-2013: Report of timing chain tensioners of 29k mile 2010 GTI EA113 failing and wrecking engine 1 month out of warranty. Assumed to have been on inappropriate Longlife Oil service regime. 3-5-2013: Report of failure of 6-speed manual transmission of 1.4TSI at 4 years old and 26,000 miles, always annually dealer serviced. 26-5-2013: On 2009 Golf 1.4TSi 122, original chain failed at 43k, 2nd change failed at 50k. Now on its 3rd chain, tensioner, and pulleys. Along with all the hydraulic tappets now replaced, all done under warranty.

Indeed, that was my point, cam belts are getting binned by some makers but chains appear to have their issues too.

There are chains and chains unfortunately first generation V8 jag chains arnt the same as fifth generation chains. Vauxhall had a nightmare with the 2.2 direct injection petrol engines which they also sold to Alfa. Its the bean counters that cause all the problems, engineers design something and the bean counters cut it to the bone. They never learn and never will cos dey is clever and ave degrees in destroying a gud design in the name ov profit ha

Bit to the side here, but I just opened up my electronic calculator to change the batteries. My 'precision screwdrivers' are on the boat but I did have a tiny screwdriver that came with a sewing machine that was small enough to open the screws. So I thought I'd look Ebay.co.uk for some more precision screwdrivers and came across these Made in Poland screwdrivers. I think their reputation is 'good' but let me tell you those sticky labels are a bastard to remove! www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YATO-TWISTED-HEAD-SOFT-GRIP-PRECISION-SCREWDRIVER-PH0-PH1-SET-6pcs-/391732980775?hash=item5b351aec27:g:vFIAAOSwmrlUupHr I would be interested to hear if anyone here has experience with these Yato products...

The thing for me is, I've never had a Cam chain fail, but had two Cam belts go.
