dammit are you putting the kiss of death on me ? Had to put into Harwich !!! Got galloping diesel bug !!! Changing filters like they are going out of style !!! It's bloody annoying ( though not as annoying as waiting for months to get off the berth.) Thank god for the solar panels !!! as I can't run the generator either. Going to a Marina near Pin Mill while I empty the tank and get a load of new filters. unfortunately the crew have to disappear as they have a towing job in a couple of days but they will be back in a vfew days to continue the trip' more tomorrow as at anchor in the Orwell and totally knackered

How do you know it's 'diesel bug'? We'd need samples photographed under the microscope to see them critters. Maybe it's just been a general shake-up of the tank, fuel sloshing around, and just sediment/rust that's being sucked up? New lifeboat at Aldeburgh btw!

Hello John, I'm sorry to hear about your diesel problems, it often happens with boats that have been laying idle for a long time.
Wouldn't it be possible to rig up a temporary installation with clean fuel in one or two empty oil-drums that are safely attached in your engine room, at least then you know that all the fuel is clean, and you can clean out your barges tanks at a more convenient moment (while waiting to get into the drydock ?)
As long as you managed to get into Harwich without assistance, it's (still not) alright, but very worrying, not good for stress-levels.
Hope that your next move will trouble free.
Peter.

Oh mate, what a bummer, still nothing you can't cope with but it would have been nicer to have just had a straight run up the coast. Phil

thanks guys (and gal) we're at anchor off Shotley point just opposite Harwich in the river. We used most of the spare diesel getting in here. We are going in to Shotley Maria in about half an hour to get some more clean diesel, they don't have any free berths for a 66 footer so we are just going to get some diesel (in the spare cans) then we are going up the Orwell to Woolverstone marina (just past Pin Mill). Someone is coming up to collect the crew. I am going to have a day off to catch up on some sleep. they are going to return the day after with loads of spare filters.
My job is to pump all the contaminated fuel into drums for disposal (there must be 100 litres at least swilling round in the engine room bilges) then get the inspection hatch off the tank and clean everything up.
We have discovered the problem, there is a pencil sized hole in the base of the breather tube for the tank. Water running off the wheelhouse roof is being funneled exactly to that point !!! An easy fix for now is going to be plastic metal but while in drydock I think there will be a re-think about the layout and a new system installed !!!
I guess it's all part of the joys of boating ........ still it's better than sitting for three months waiting for a tide !!!

I guess it's good the cause identified and fixable though most annoying for you...have good rest before next bit and enjoy your time out on her. I've overdone the hard graft here with added efforts on keep fit front and to-day through necessity declared day of rest...legs r jelly and post Tip run crawled back home....We r none of us spring chickens....

I'd be tempted to get hold of a couple of lorry fuel tanks and strap them in somewhere for emergencies.

I'd be tempted to get hold of a couple of lorry fuel tanks and strap them in somewhere for emergencies. Oddly that is not a loit different from our thoughts ....... we have got to measure up and see if we can get a 1000 litre bowser tank on tjhe stern deck as a temp measure and look at installing a second tank in the engine room. Need to do some measuring and thunking ..... Hard to concentrate at mo .... going to bed some piccies tomorrow
