Yes. They were phased out because narrow boaters kept nicking them for capping their silly vertical exhaust pipes (giggle)

My "sea searcher" magnet is ok, but you have to hit things of any size square on. Show us your magnet mr magnetman.

I have quite a few big ones. I use neodymium magnets. They are much better than ferrite. The one I was using today will completely demagnetise a sea searcher because it is massively more powerful. 60mm dia x 30mm thick Neodymium magnet I mounted in a heavy aluminium cylinder.
If you put your finger between the magnet and a thick (20mm) steel plate it will amputate your finger on the way to attaching itself to the steel !
A little bit dangerous but gods teeth it pulls a lot of shit out of the water !!!
I love big powerful magnets but anyrhing much bigger than this one is at risk of getting stuck and being lost underwater.

Mines on a hateful piece of cord and hard to aim. I must improve it or get a stronger one.

No its on a rope. Neodymium magnets need to be in a protective casing or they will break (sintered). I used 10mm wall aluminium tube with am aluminium disc bolted to it with an eyebolt (magnet has a central hole) right through the whole thing. Works excellently. Happy to pm you an ingredients list if you fancy making one it was about £50 to diy it.

Sounds dangerous...and wonderful. I was about to ask where you would get such a beast. How do you make it let go?

I've bothered to look myself now, sorry about that!
Sea searcher reckons 64kg lifting power. Lots of people selling Neodymium magnets on the net, what rating is yours?

Rating underwater recovery magnets by lifting weight is pointless and irrelevant. They will categorically NEVER achieve their rating in real use. My magnet has a pull off of about 100kg but I have always recovered it, partly because it has a bolt head protruding from center of face so can not get a full flat contact.
They do a video of the sea searcher lifting a big block of steel and a gas bottle.
Do people regularly drop big lumps of steel in? No. And a gas bottle floats ! And a sea searcher won't pull a mooring pin out by the tip. Neodymium will do this.
Sea searchers are crap.
I don't have a vested interest as I no longer sell magnets anyway but get a neodymium magnet and you will be impressed.
Plenty on eBay - none of them mine.
I like to use large diameter and thick magnets. Thickness seems to help with the actual magnetic penetration which in turn helps get shit out of the cut.
Problem with large magnets is you end up with a huge pile of scrap which you either have to throw back in or dispose of.
Bit of a head scratching moment !

A bit like one drop of superglue will lift an elephant... but won't stick the logo back on your car.
