The boat house at Guildford is closed completely now. No boats at all. We moored near there yesterday and I found a rollock from a dinghy but nothing else of much interest. Fortunately the rollock is the right size for my dinghy Yes, it's a shame the Guildford Boat house has closed, it has been for about 5 years now. I expect there will be another posh house in its place, but it seems to be taking ages, perhaps someone is sitting on the land and waiting for the prices to go up! I'll be in the Guildford meadows tonight, perhaps i'll see you there, or at Godalming tomorrow. Nipper

They used to hire a lot of victorian style clinker built 4 oared wooden boats with ornate wrought ironwork supporting the back of the paired seats (where the passengers sat), as well as smaller 2 oared and even a couple of skiffs as well as Canadian canoes. another of my childhood landmarks wiped out by progress

Nipper We turned round at Guildford as I have excessive amounts of "equipment" on the roof and would not be arsed to clear it for Broadford bridge ! We did godalming last year anyway. Back onto the Thames today.

I used to find the best place for magneting windlasses was around the paddle gear of locks.

My record is 13 out of Batchworth lock (GU south) in about an hour. Most of them were in the centre of the lock chamber where they get "washed" by the ground paddles.

Had a couple of horribly rubbish low quality ikea kitchen knives out today. Bread knives so quite handy for cutting ropes and shit off the prop etc.
I hate ikea.
And quite a nice cold chisel.
