Incidentally (I don't know what Higgs thinks of this) I have always found that you need to use mini rollers rather than the full size ones when painting boats. (I always use fluffy rollers whatever the type of paint but you need to buy good ones, the ones from the £1 shop end up bald very quickly) Of course I am speaking as a total barbarian that thinks the only reason for paint is to stop the rust showing

The speed at which the paint needed to be applied pretty much determined the size of roller, at work. 7" foam gloss rollers for the large areas like the cabin sides; 4" gloss rollers for the smaller panels. For coach lines, I used to cut a 4" roller down to fit just a bit over the coach line width; 3" and 2" brushes to lay off or, tipping is the other expression used.
You may have noticed, with cheap 4" rollers, the inner plastic tube support does not reach the end of the foam roller. It can be a problem, if you need the pressure to be applied over the roller's length.
Blacking never tends to be a job you want to drag out, especially if you're working in a manky dry dock. 7" or 9" fluffy rollers hold a good quantity of blacking paint to tackle large areas quickly - just the ticket.

Ah well, it's nice to know what a "proper painter" would do (laying off ? I thought that was when they told you there was no work) (Tipping ? Isn't That's what happens when you put too much ballast on one side )

I got into painting purely accidentally, didn't know what I was letting myself in for; just as well. After 11 years, it dawned on me - I was a masochist.

over the many years I have been involved with boats and being usually slightly impoverished (the polite term for short arms and deep pockets) I have learned to be a "bodger" in many fields. My woodwork is a couple of grades up from "bend the ends of the nails over to stop them pulling out" My steelwork is very strong pigeon droppings. My mechanical skills means I rarely have too many nuts and washers left over. My painting skills stops the steel from going rusty ....... for a little while. At sea my navigation has always managed to get me there ........ eventually. Just as well I'm easily satisfied !!!!!

You should put a Tender in for some of those Public Sector Contracts John, you seem to have the typical skill set

The hebden Bridge dry dock is rented by the week, so you have plenty of time. You can live on the boat. Found the number on my phone....01422 284428. It's managed/owned by Calderdale Council, though Dave at Bronte Boats would like to run it if he could! You need a wire cup brush, it screws straight on to the head/spindle of an angle grinder. I had safety glasses and a face shield mask on as well as a dust mask and I still got some bits in my eyes! Had to wander round to the chemist,Face and paper overalls covered in black dust,to get a bottle of optrex. It's best if you just supervise and get swmbo to do the job!

Those big cup brushes on a 9" machine do some 'orrible things to your arms with the vibration and when they start shedding bristles they will go right through boilersuits. I used to wear a welders chrome leather apron when I was renovating Sabina H and I used to finish the day looking like a porcupine.

I've had some success with an angle grinder in rusty pits in the past. I then Fertran the pits, then clean off the Fertran stains on the surrounding paintwork. Then I use Isopon body filler and sand smooth, prime and paint. So far so good.

Whoever awoke this thread has the curse of the zombies upon Him! Who is this tomten fella? Not Nutter again? How's the blacking coming along then? Mine is due, 2 years in May. I'm curious to check out the bottom, I blacked it, partly because my mooring often dries out, so more O2 getting to it. There are 3 4" strips, where the boat was sitting on the trestles, that weren't cleaned off or painted, so will sit the boat along a bit on the trestles. I'm booking in to dry dock in Hebden Bridge, a week costs £300 ish.

Err.... we did our blacking in July, did you not see the photos? thunderboat.boards.net/thread/574/bedtime-witchy-foxys-summer-adventure No photos of the blacking itself though; I suppose we could have put the camera on 'interval shooting' but didn't. 300/week sounds a lot for Hebden Bridge, there's no cover! We didn't paint the underside, even the hull surveyor said it was a waste of effort. It would have taken ages to dry and we only had 4 days which included a lot of welding, and I painted the roof again a sixth time.
