I hope that one of the electrickery specialist will be able to tell me in laymans terms what to do, to make this charger work again. The story is, I bought this charger at the Mastervolts works in the Netherlands, where I had given them a Mastervolt charger that needed to be repaired. I was in the Netherlands for 1 week, and they said that they only needed a couple of hours to sort the thing, and they would call me to tell me that it was ready for pick up. After 4 days, still no call, so I called them to find out how things were going with my charger, they said that it was working but needed some fine tuning, and more testing, as the voltage was a bit too high. Well in the end they didn't manage to repair my charger, and to make up for it, they sold me this charger brand new with 35% discount. This charger was in reality just a back up for my old American charger/inverter (Trace U2624SB), and I've only used it occasionally to charge my second battery bank. But now that I've got a problem with the silent 4000W diesel genny, that won't start, because the Dynastart is tired, for which I have a new anchor already, I'm waiting now for new brushes to arrive from Belgium, as that was the only place I could find that had these in stock. So to charge my batteries in these short- and dark days when the solar is giving next to nothing (or less) I had to run the Kipor 2000 IG, emergency genny, and I connected the Mastervolt charger. For 1 second all the lights on the control panel came on, and then only the bottom one where it says "Bulk Charge", but there is no bulk charge, the charger doesn't seem to charge at a ll, so now I have a garage charger that charges 30Amps but that isn't an intelligent charger (a bit like myself ), connected to the Kipor. If someone knows what this problem could be, I would be happy if they can explain what I can do to get it to work again, the warranty has expired as this machine was bought about 10 years ago, but only had to work for a few weeks at the time, and has been hanging on a safe-dry and dustfree place in the engineroom ever since. Thanks very much in advance for all the possible things to do to get it to work again, I haven't tried the sledge hammer trick yet, although I was inclined to give that a try. Peter.

It might be stupid, but is the load to much for the generator?

It might be stupid, but is the load to much for the generator? No, Kris that's far from stupid, but I don't think that that's the case, as the Kipor's maximum output is 2.0 kVA and the rated output 1.6 kVA, and I think that that should be enough to power the charger. Also I don't understand why the Bulk Charge light is on without any charge coming out. I had tried the charger about 6 months ago, just to see if it would charge the second battery bank when my 4kVA diesel genny was still working, and that gave the same result, but I didn't really need the charger then, so didn't worry about it, but now I do. Peter.

Have you got a manual handy, I'm sure from memory the led(s) remaining on in certain combinations indicates an error code.

A quick skeggy on the manual on t'internet would suggest the error is 'battery sense error'. But this would be accompanied by the 'charge failure light. ie the bulk charge light and the charge failure light would both be on.

Thanks for your researches Martin, when I switch the charger on for 1 second all the lights came on, and then only the Bulk Charge light, and the Charge failure light is out. Peter. I was going to suggest a few things but then you go on to mention that it didn’t work last time you tried it, with a different power source. So it’s probably knackered.
But anyway, you could try: connecting it to the genny without the battery leads connected, then connect the battery leads Plugging it into “proper” mains, ie shore power Plug a 100 to 150w incandescent bulb into the genny (using an adaptor), or some other resistive load, then plug in the charger as well.

Had a quick look at the manual, but suspect it’s for a later version. What colour is the light you mention? Have you checked the fuse that should be between the charger and the batteries (near the batteries hopefully)?

Does the front panel look like this? In which case, which led are we talking about, 6 or 1?

50a at 24v is a large load. Not sure what type or charger it is but my old Heart interface 130a 12v charger gives my 6kw generator a bit of work. I'm surprised if a Kipper 2000 will run a 50a 24v charger.
No expert on this but it does seem too much load.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions Nick, it may be knackered but I don't understand why, as it has hardly ever done any work at all. I will try to find a shop that sells crocodile clamps to connect and disconnect, as now it's connected with more permanent c able connectors.
"Proper" mains would be nice, if I had that available, I wouldn't bother with gennies of course.
Only during the summer season there's shore power at the town quay, but that's disconnected now (until may ?), the river is in flood again, and there's no navigation allowed.
Which means that I'm stuck, I am a dummy concerning electrickery, as I thought that the Kipor was supplying me with the same power as shore power.
Peter.

Yes I think you may well be right, however I was concerned that he also said it didn’t work with a 4kva genny. You can of course turn the max current down, but only via Masterbus / a PC, not via the DIP switches.

The Kipor has an inverter built in, so whilst it SHOULD be the same power superficially, in reality the waveform isn’t perfect and this can upset some devices. Adding the incandescent bulb can help to smooth the waveform. Are you running the Kipor in variable speed mode, or full speed mode? If the former, try the latter. But I think, as MM says, that charger is probably beyond the capabilities of the Kipor. I have the same genny and it only just runs my 12v 30A charger, due to the transient/start up loads.

Yes, I think that that's what my front panel looks like, if all is well, here's a photo of the magic non-working charger. Just see that's it's slightly different, probably because this is an ancient model, maybe it was ancient already when they sold it to me, when they discovered that I knew nothing about these machines, this one may have been waiting for Napolion, who never came to get it. Peter.
