We're at Anderton, and considering a run into Castlefield. We both love Manchester city centre. I've seen that, since our last visit, Peel Holdings have turned part of Castlefield basin over to permanent moorings, significantly restricting the number of visitor moorings. In addition the service block near the basin entrance has now gone. The last time we visited, the visitor moorings were for 72 hours. Are spaces available for visitors? Are there any services now (water, elsan, rubbish)? I'm also going to need a diesel top up in the next week. I have used Ariel (coal boat) in the past, but if we don't meet, where's good to call? Hopefully someone's been recently Rog

We were there a year ago. It did seem all the moorings on the right were LTM and there was no room. We went to the left and moored outside the gym opposite the amphitheatre.
Which was nice as in the evening there were lost of flame throwing and twirling going on and a choir.
Only seconds away from the museum too.
There did seem to be two boaters that had been there a while but other than them, it was nice and quiet.

The only service we saw was a water tap. On the left next ro the big arche in the pic but we weren' looking for others. I can have a look in my guide book if it's here.

How about Stretford Marina? The man who was there last June when we pulled in was a very decent sort -and catch a bus/taxi/tram in to the centre?

How about Stretford Marina? The man who was there last June when we pulled in was a very decent sort -and catch a bus/taxi/tram in to the centre? We've always bought diesel there as competitive price and there is a CRT style water tap too. Last time we were there was 2 years ago and water was still available at the sanitary station at Castle field. Just the elsan/toilet block locked.

Called at Thorne marine at Stockton Heath and got diesel (72p).
Off into Castlefield today.
Going to call at Stretford and enquire about moorings.

Be aware that when you go through Lymm, all the shops are closed and everything is under a state of depression and absolute neglect due to Peel Holding's draconian grip of the canal. Allegedly, according to gigoguy. Grappenhall - we went into the Parr Arms which was OK, there's another one very close by, The Rams head Inn which looks OK from Google Street View. Swan with Two Nicks at Dunham Massey may be worth calling in to.

Full at Stretford at the moment. We're moored by the YHA in Castlefield. Very busy but there are free spaces, and the private moorings are clearly marked as such. Visitor moorings are still 72 hours. Off into town to eat Rog

The Swan with Two Nicks is good, but expensive.
The Olde No 3 has reopened (well it was shut when we were last here) and seems to do food at a reasonable price, with lots of deals.
I have to say thus far, tales of the Bridgewater being a desolate wilderness, with commerce destroyed by the heartless Peel Holdings, are a tad exaggerated.
Lymm was pretty full with moored boats, as was Stockton Heath, and both were very bustling busy hives of activity, but it was Friday and Saturday respectively we were there.
Moorings at Castlefield are pretty much as on our last visit, but the 'permanent' moorers are now officially so.
A day in the city tomorrow then Wigan bound.

I've just noticed that the train company London Midland has been told to go away, and West Midland Trains & London North Western companies are filling its boots now. Just bought tickets from Bromsgrove to Birmingham £4 each. And from Birmingham to Manchester - £6.50 each. For our Summer trip. Also £11 each from Gatwick to Droitwich Spa via Reading and Oxford. And plane tickets £50 (the Witch) and £75 (me) - on the same plane, Norwegian - from Helsinki to Gatwick (one way). The Quick Brown Fox buy in advance and gets it all cheap! History. Run by the Dutch and the Japs. Norwegian.
