I remember one of the Top Gear lads describing the 75 driving experience as like "being wafted about on a cloud" sounds pretty good to me. I did have a Rover once. A 418SLD with the Peugeot diesel. I owned it 2003-2005. Great car very comfy but it was subjected to my personal "no maintenance" strategy which sadly killed it. I cooked it due to ignoring the fact the water pump needed doing. Very comfy car. Yup, i had one of those too. I had a peogeot 405 before it with the same engine. Both good tow cars and fault free in three years each apart from a leaky sunroof on the Pug and a drivers door mirror that disappeared down inside the door on the 418 SLD.

Is that one of the cars that comes with an old gimmer flat cap and cruise control that automatically sets it to 57mph in the middle lane, moving over for no one?

Seeing this thread reminded me of the 214i that I had for about 15years. Loved it,went like sugar off a shovel and would always sit tight no matter how I chucked it around on the esses with the tyres singing. Sorry to let it go when repair costs outweighed value. She lived on because a young lad I knew always lusted after her for banger racing, he was quite successful with her too. Phil

Whilst at home this time, our 22 year old 1.4 petrol VW Polo 'played up' for the final time. A recurring but infrequent starting problem had me biting table tops in frustration, after all, what's the point of a car if it doesn't start when you wish to use it! New rotar arm, distributor cap, ht leads, and spark plugs until I decided the, sod it ... the car (with still only 80k on the clock) had served us for 7 years whilst costing only £300, and had done enough. We got a 3 year old Hyundai i10 1.2 petrol 5 door with 10k on the clock, and two years warranty. Starts every time and pleasant to drive, and £30 for tax, rather than £140. Another little bonus is, I've called and cancelled my RAC cover after 34 years as the car's covered as part of the warranty Rog

As Gazza says, a very competent little czar that has and is serving well. Not as smooth as the 5 series auto and with no electric sunroof to put a set of 3 m extension ladders through, not a very good works van!

Reassuring thanks @gazza and mouse. The car will sit in the garage quite a lot in normal years, and we do very little mileage (5k ish), so hoping it'll last a while. We've hired them many times from Enterprise so I take that as a positive sign of their durability too. Rog

Going back to the Rovers I went to view a 1990 Sterling with the Honda engine in 2011 but it was not big enough for me (6'2.5"). It was a really good one. Cool motor. The seller also had a Saab 9000 Aero which was big enough for me to sit up in and a wonderful car which lasted me 7 year with just tyres and pads. that was also eventually undermined by my lack of maintenance. Sold it to a fusiast £450 who I suspect may have added a few HP judging by the 9000 he drove me to the station in. That really did move !! Talk about rearranging internal organs!
If I had my time again I would have taken care of that 9000 because it was a really nice car. Quality made into reality. Wicked piece of equipment. Probably the best car in the world.
