Using a weedhatch in any kind of slop would be difficult and probably dangerous, especially if it was a bad tangle, crab pot lines or the like.

Correct and safest procedure, inform coastguard and if a tow is available accept it. Even if it could be cleared safely at sea, you would still want the lifeboat standing by just in case.
