When I changed 20 litres of our engine coolant in June, at the same time changing the water pump impeller, I wanted to block the higher coolant pipe which goes from the pump to the engine, so that coolant wouldn't pour out of it whilst it was off. One of the mechanics at Shire Cruisers found a 'pipe stop' for us - as I remember, it was all plastic, you insert the 'tube' into the hose and clip the cap shut. Or was it screw the cap shut? It's just a temporary way to close the end of the pipe. I can't find anything similar with a hunt round the Internet, does anyone know about such items? I'd like to buy one or two for ourselves for when we next need hoses, which will probably be as soon as we buy some more 'pink antifreeze' - we changed 20 litres but have no idea how much our keel tank holds, and i'm quite happy to change another 20 litres ASAP and another 20 litres next Summer (until I'm sure we have a consistent mix and it all comes out looking pink and not murky olive-green as it did in June). I asked in our local hardware store but the best they could suggest is a plug/bung for plonking into the hole in the bottom of your boat, this kind of thing: I did buy a metal hose clamp but on looking at the hose decided it was best not to crush it, and anyway the clamp method looked ineffective.

Re right level of anti freeze, isn't there a hydrometer calibrated for that, like a battery test one? So it doesn't matter how big your system is.

Had thought of those, but the 'pipe stop' we were offered seemed like a much better, more 'solid' (less likely to pop out) method. I shall continue the search.

Just carve yourself a set of wooden bungs to suit, just right for your engine. Chop a couple of inches off your long shaft. Or find a tree branch just the right size.

Re right level of anti freeze, isn't there a hydrometer calibrated for that, like a battery test one? So it doesn't matter how big your system is. I wasn't on about that. What I wanted to do, and started doing, is to refresh all of the engine coolant. I believed we were told it was 'green' but then was told "No, we put pink in!" by the people who renovated our engine 3 years ago. What came out was a murky olive green. The next-door car garage said they had never seen coolant/antifreeze that colour before. They sold us 5 litres of 'pink'. A 25% concentration is good enough for English winters (in Finland we use 50% - any higher than that and the antifreeze doesn't work so well). So I replaced 20 litres, and want to keep doing that until I am happy that what comes out all looks like '25% pink'. I don't want to drain the whole system all at once as there can be problems with air locks inside the engine. The method I have chosen is fine, it's just that, for next time, I'd like a 'pipe stop' or two for the hoses that conect to the water pump. Luvvly jubbly. We paid £15 for 5 litres.
