Due to the encroaching piling works to my mooring outside the drydock in Hull, I have moved further up to a quieter environment ..... yesterday morning I was sat in the wheelhouse with the doors and windows all shut, wearing ear defenders. This morning left at 0750 and set off up the river First one .... It's a nice boat. I'm glad I went aboard when it was local to me in in Benfleet as it seems John may be stuck up north for some time.
What I want to know is are those railings secure.

I am very pleased with the result

They're good and solid Andrew, I check them fairly regularly as being welded directly to the deck they are prone to corrosion at the base, especially where water has a tendency to gather in ripples in the decks. Over the years a couple became "wasted" at the bottom and I have had to beef them up by welding a cut sleeve over the base. SAM_0618 by mudlarker2, on Flickr SAM_0620 by mudlarker2, on Flickr

Interesting trip John, and good pictures to boot. Where have you ended up? Will it be for the winter?

I will stay for minimum of a month until they finish all the works in Hull. After that I am not sure, although the access at John Dean's drydock from the lay by berth is 'orrid, I thoroughly enjoy being there ...... maybe I will keep a permanent berth in Beverly but not spend much time on it during the cruising season. Maybe just use it to hole up for the winter. It all hinges on many things, no-one is sure exactly what they are doing at the jaws of the drydock and it could be that we can make a better layby berth with easier access there (although there will always be the big rise and fall of tide) As well as that I will be going back to Essex by car in a couple of weeks for one or two days and I will have another go at the yard owner down there to try and persuade him to give me an outside berth there .... although I don't hold out any real degree of hope ....... I really don't understand his attitude. Anyway, the boatyard here is not as secure as Hull but the tidal rise and fall is only a couple of feet and I will be afloat all the time easy access ...... even for a geriatric [/url

Hmmmm !!! it's getting bloody windy here !!! I think I might postpone my move to the boatyard for a couple of days ...... it's half a mile or so past rows of moored boats along a narrow channel (one boat double moored narrows the channel down to very tight indeed in fact it's restricting the navigable channel ......it might still be there after I have gone past

Do you have crew? No ....... but if the wind on Sunday is as forecast it should be perfectly ok, it's as near canal maneuvering as it can get on a tidal river and I didn't find that a problem single handed, providing It wasn't windy and providing I hadn't been mucking about with the ballast and getting her too light at the bow I'll go near to slack water as possible.
