4.30 is a bit early this time of year. 04:30 is a bit early anytime of the bloody year! Not if you only have one day to get from Northampton to Maffers before you have to go back to work. We only made it to Ivinghoe at 22.30 that night (18hrs on the go) and had to do the last bit to Maffers before going to work the next day. I was young (47) at the time. ETA I was in the bar at the rally past midnight so only managed about 4hrs sleep.

TMP gearbox, a delicate little flower. Do not rush any change from fwd to reverse or vice versa. It will sulk and generally will not give you the gear you want. Not good in a panic situation, so thinking ahead is required. Also do not stop engine with the gearbox in gear. They get very upset and normally will refuse to disengage when next called upon.

Yeah but when u first have a boat panic is the only emotion that gets through in crises ... Thinking ahead comes with practice and time....

You got off lightly, then. Gazza's picture of a gearbox should be removed - diagrams like that are frightening. Oh, yes, almost forgot to add: how old are the gear cables? If you say "Don't know" then I will send a stony stare your way. Gear cables should be changed once a year. Nah, when one goes, replace both, carry the working one as a spare, change it when you need to. Of course that's when you are adrift above a weir, such unplanned excitement.

I'll let you know when mouse achieves that goal I am most of the way there, I usually get it right when choosing the correct way to come alongside outside the pub using prop walk to my advantage!

I was just getting used to using the prop walk on Sabina to my advantage (it was very severe) when I had the pitch altered and a half Kort nozzle fitted. Entering Ocean lock on my first trip after the works, I banged her hard astern expecting her to swing hard to starboard slowing down and crabbing towards the wall. It didn't happen !!! ....... Good job she's a tough old girl

Could you use one of those to pull your boat along? Would CRT then give a discount?

Well made it to Gayton with no disasters. Several lessons learnt, main one is that 16 locks single handed is a lot for your first day going solo.
PS. Why were all places that I had to tie up to the side on the left! Didn't the people who built canals know that that makes it harder for me.

That's a respectable amount of locks for one day single-handed. I too will have 16 from Audlem (11 up, after 4 up the previous afternoon) and 5 at Addersley, at Christmas. Are you enjoying being on a boat? Isn't it nice in the evening when dusk arrives and it's time to stop and you can open the whisky and start frying noodles in the wok?
