Well made it to Gayton with no disasters. Several lessons learnt, main one is that 16 locks single handed is a lot for your first day going solo.
PS. Why were all places that I had to tie up to the side on the left! Didn't the people who built canals know that that makes it harder for me. .... Are you enjoying being on a boat? ... Sort of, I know I will, it's just the fact that I'm doing so many things for the first time and don't have the confidence that I'll manage to sort it out if I cock up. A few more days and I'll start to relax a bit and truly start to enjoy the lifestyle.

Don't be too alarmed if people go past and the boat goes back and forth. Put decent pins in. To quote a good friend of mine "I'm afraid this is as good as it gets. If you don't like it get a caravan and it won't happen"

You are doing so well..you will relax, I was so lucky my maiden voyage was accompanied by the guy who fitted boat out and found my boat builder..he was ace and taught me so much about how to handle the boat and what to look out for..I scribbled down all his words of wisdom and sent him countless text questions which he patiently answered...When I used to g out on my boat he'd have his mobile on standby waiting.. Friends like that are few and far between.

If you don't like it get a caravan and it won't happen" Quite ok with mooring up, once if stopped adjacent to the side (and not kicked the back end out too far by using too much reverse). Must have rocked a boat today whilst trying to moor, got stuck on mud so had to go hard astern, thankfully we had already exchanged the Hello Hello pleasantries so the owner of the other boat came rushing out once I was free of the mud to let me know where the nearest better mooring was (thank you if you are reading this...). As for a bit of rocking, I'm all up for it...

You've got some seriously nice canal scenery coming up if you are heading south on the GU. Its thing of beauty.
OK so Milton Keynes is a big nightmarish but other than that I can not really find any negatives.

The offside moorings at Great Linford (great pub), Campbell Park and Fenny Stratford are all great, and give access to good stuff too. You're correct about the rest of the GU ... it's a terrific canal. Rog

MK is OK. I spent a lot of time around there in the early 00s mainly targets turn and Wolverton. The thing I dislike it from a boating point of view is that there is a long pound with no locks. When I was in the area it was usually during winter so handy to hang around which is the case for AI now so I guess the "nightmarish" comment was a bit out of order in a way. I always thought a good trivia question would be how many roundabouts are there in Milton Keynes to the nearest 5. I'd be tempted to go through to Leighton Buzzard as its a nicer area and you get some locks

What is the chance of getting a mooring near to the Black Horse for several days? Is the area packed out with winter moorers or am I likely to be ok, trying to find somewhere fairly close to a train station so parents can visit (if very scruffy please let me know) plus I can get access to shops (mainly Srewfix type).
PS. First time I've ever seen someone describe LB as a nice area

Passing through MK on a boat is a different story. The town planners (it's a town not a F'ing city despite what the road signs may like you to think...) got it spot on around the canal. Even Wolverton and New Bradwell which is generally acknowledge as a shithole is Ok by canal. Be sure to stop at the Navigation or Barley Mow Cosgrove, Galleon Old Wolverton, Black Horse Linford, even the Barge at Wollstone was OK for an estate locked pub. Three locks at Solbury was good last time we came through.

(although glad to see not too much has changed over the years)! Looking forward to a takeaway from the Spice tomorrow night, and Bat out of hell will be playing at some point tomorrow.

Black Horse is an overpriced shit hole! Navigation has been pimped up beyond belief We wont stop at either now! Strangely outside the new flats at Wolverton is OK and very close to the station. Next time you come up the arm you will be able to do it single handed without tying up for locks, its easy once you know how.

Why would he want to descend the Northampton arm and go back up it anytime soon? Just think of the pleasures that are waiting. GU south up the Thames then the Oxford then etc etc

More than A tiny bit jealous! The Spice was excellent last time we ate there. Make sure Meatloaf is at volume 11 through the tunnel - bollocks to Flincher and his mates Pop in to the Boat for a beer, it's Ok in there and has more about it than the Navigation. We are out with mouse trip up River to Ely, lunch in Appleyard and Lincoln old gaff then back for an oil change and decommission the domestic water ready for the onset of the Arctic blast naughtyfox sends our way.
