Just been totally smoked out in the boat
All of a sudden, no warning at all the Rayburn started smoking like crazy ... smoke pouring out of the gaps round the door and from somewhere at the back .... there were even wisps coming out from round the hot plate.
Normally it's as good as gold ... I couldn't understand it, I have only had it going for a few times since the flue was swept and the section under the hot plate vacuumed out !!!
I have had to open all the windows and the wheelhouse doors to try and clear the air ..... fortunately there wasn't much wood on the fire so it was easy to extinguish.
When the smoke eventually cleared I was able to investigate, I was suspecting a blocked flue, maybe a bird in it but it all seemed clear, no more soot than you would expect .... it wasn't making any kind of sense, everything was clear but the smoke wasn't going up the chimney
eventually I found that it was in the smoke box (that sits on the top of the stove with the control slide, front inspection plate and the adaptor to the 6" flue.

At the back of this box is a round plate held there by a bar bolted to the inside edge clamping it onto the unit. I don't know what this is there for, it has not been used on any Rayburns I have seen.
The flat bar clamp had fallen off, the central mounting screw had corroded away and the round plate had slid to one side allowing all the smoke to flood straight out into the room and also removed the draft from the fire so the smoke just drifted out everywhere
Thank goodness I have diesel central heating as well ...... 'cos the boat is distinctly cold (as well as still smelling of smoke) I reckon another half hour of hypothermia and I can close the bloody windows again and turn the thermostat up
