Way back in the early 70's I was stopped by traffic 60 in a 30! I was driving a highly modified 1293 Cooper S a very quick car for the time, coppers asked about it had look under the bonnet, they both took it for a spin came back well chuffed and let me off with a warning

What is that film? Is it from when he was still funny? It's the only film I've seen where Steve Martin gets it spot on. Trains, Planes & Automobiles. Script is good, filming/direction is good; it's one of those films where you want to watch every second. 1987, directed by John Hughes. I also like it because I've been to those parts of America.

I said "Why do you want me to do that?" He said "I want to check the engine hasn't been stolen". I said "No, it's definitely still there mate". No sense of humour, some people.

I was wooed by the recaro seats. I'm sure a mini would have been more fun. I did have an N reg mini 1000 briefly but it was a bit of a wreck (no MoT etc) and I blew a hole in the bonnet when I put the battery in nice round hole almost like it was drilled. Bit of a burn mark around it. Must have been the wrong size battery I suppose. One of the things I had wanted to do was to put a metro turbo engine in a Mini. That would have been quite good. I expect people will have done it.

Ive been on the awareness course before...Far easier, as Dogless says, Β to just sit there and listen! I do struggle with the part where braking distances are mentioned, despite the βreaction timeβ not altering, the actual stopping time has tumbled 10 fold!Β Ive owned a fully restored, drum brake equipt 1956 Austin A30 ( it was my wedding car in 1992π) and to compare stopping distances rolled out from when 'thisβ ruled the roads and the date the highway code recommendations were printed to nowadays & my 530hp Techart Porsche Turbo with Ceramic discs & 6 pot calipers is, quite frankly, laughable!! But hey...speeding kills, never a mention of bad driving ultimately being the cause!Β your right, speeding has never killed anyone. idiot and dangerous drivers do.

I guess we all have a tale to tell about the cops and speeding. I was pulled over for speeding just before the Paddington turn off from the A40 back in the eighties. The highly incensed officers wanted to know if I was deliberately taking the Mickey by overtaking them at 95mph. As it happened, I was driving a loaner while the car I was buying was having work done, and when asked who the owner was, could only give the nickname of the chap concerned, and could only surmise, in response to their questions over MOT and insurance, that his car business covered it. Told to produce my driving licence and the other papers within a short period of time at Paddington Green, I said I could take along my driver's licence, but the owner was away on an extended holiday in Cornwall and uncontactable, so I would be unable to comply. I did go down the next day with my licence, and a month or so later finally produced the car documents, but very much later still, half a dozen summonses dropped through the letterbox β having no registration documents; filing to produce when required; failing to have an MOT; failing to produce MOT when required; driving without insurance, and failing to produce insurance documents. I rang Paddington Green saying I had indeed produced all doc.s, albeit late as I had explained they would be, and asked them to confirm this from their records. They stroppily refused, saying it was not up to them to prove my innocence! I then rang the issuing station, and got a helpful civilian clerk who eventually tracked down the records and cancelled all the summonses. Thing was, in all their excitement at the idea that they may have landed some sort of car thief, with multiple indictable offences, the original officers had forgotten all about the reason they had stopped me in the first place, so I got away with the speeding free and clear.

mine was simular, in the late 90's I was driving at about 3 am taking the missus home and i over took a lorry in a 40 zone. got followed by an unmarked car and eventually pulled.
when they asked if we took drugs my missus at the time said she had, half an hour later they a specialist unit were still searching the car. while all this was going in I was having a great general chat with the copper, at the end he said if he put 80mph down on the ticket I would be losing my licence so put 50 instead.
i sent a cheque off and went to cop shop to produce my docs but couldent find my license anywhere.
I got cautioned for failing to produce but three weeks later got a letter with my cheque in and a letter stating they will leave it this time but if I get caught again they wpuld throw the book at me.

your right, speeding has never killed anyone. idiot and dangerous drivers do. and often 'idiot and dangerous drivers' drive too fast........ they do indeed. I would still say that speeding alone is never really the cause. not paying enough attention and poor roadcraft will play a major factor in 99% of accidents, speed just makes the outcome worse. In 2016 1972 people died on our roads. only 349 people died from speeding or driving too fast for the conditions. i would love to know out of the 216 caused by breaking speed limit what other factors caused the accidents? speed alone won't be the main issue.

Unfortunately today the 'interaction' is purely with cameras and computers.
No discussion, no discretion, just dobbed.

Unfortunately today the 'interaction' is purely with cameras and computers. No discussion, no discretion, just dobbed. Progress. Rog That goes for a lot of types of social interaction too. We are living in a judge without jury world where people judge others without talking to them face to face. In a way it helps the police state, the fear of being captured on say YouTube makes everyone paranoid about being named and shamed to the world via social media. The way things are going we will all be too afraid to leave our living room for the fear of being reported for something or other. Worse than that, digital videos and photos can be easily doctored. Face ID is not fool proof, how safe are our accounts and proof of property ownership. Bring back Luddism I say. [written on iPhone and posted on social media]

There's a reason we've had years of evolution but no true revolution. The sun will still rise and set, and the majority will just keep on carrying on. It's what we do. Rog
