Why not just dump your Elsan in the Cut at night? That's what we do. As you're driving the rush of the water helps swill it out marvellously! That sounds fine until the next time you have to put your arm down the weedhatch.

Every time I use my new loo I'm delighted the experience is so much better than a porta potti. There's no way I'm going back to a thetford. If I never have to use an elsan point again I'll be happy. Let's face it most boaters hygiene when emptying there cassettes leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm about to start getting the gear together to do away with our glorified bucket and chuckit.

Plus they don't seem to get cleaned properly anymore. Ah yes, that's another creep, the gradual decrease in maintenence of the canal infrastructure. It's one of the reasons I think the canals should be run purely by volunteers instead of running it like a corporate business. Many of us do try to leave the Elsan points in a better state than we left it. But when you get to places like Cropredy where the Elsan point hose pipe has been cut so short as to be useless, and the water pressure is no more than a prostate dribble, what do you do? Show me how to use a dredger and I'd volunteer for a few days. CC'ers are in a perfect position to do basic maintenance on locks. CRT just aren't interested (I've asked them). The creep in elf and safety obsession and law suit culture probably hasn't helped either. Basically 'they' want everyone sat at a desk staring at a screen during the day and, everone locked away in a room staring at a screen in the evening. All where 'they' can keep an eye on you. Sound familar? What sort of life is that FFS?

I must admit the lack of maintenance is a worry for me.I have never used an Elsan Point in years,I only urinate in the Thetford Toilet which is easily dealt with.I will say that there are some dirty vile boaters about, when I have stopped at a service point to either dump rubbish or fill with water the state of some is absolutely appalling.

Its not just elsans that suffer, was speaking with one of the chaps at Northolt the other day and they are seriously considering stopping non residents using their pumpout as it keeps getting blocked. normally with sanitary towels and sometimes with things like t-shirts!

Having to empty your cassette every 3 or 4 days like some people really limits your cruising as well.

Frequent having to find an Elsan point (especially when I have a guest onboard) is a problem on the little boat but a composting toilet is not an option because of serious space issues. On the main system of course there are plenty of pub loos to use . On the barge it would be practical but I have seagoing capability for self pumpout and on the mooring there is a road poop tanker that comes down for the Pub and a couple of other boats with holding tanks, so at the moment I can't see any advantage for me. If it truly works and is not smelly, I like the concept.

This thread is interesting. A few people with experience of compost loos say they are great, and lots of people with no relevant experience at all talking smack about them.
Who to believe?

Does make you think !!! I have never met anyone who has, or has had in the past a composting loo, have anything very bad to say about them. They don't seem to be any whiffier than most other toilet types and all types have some moments that when you just grit your teeth and get on with it. The only reason I have never gone further with the idea is that the systems that I have, in both boats, are practical for those particular situations.

I wonder if I should go all the way back to April and re-awaken all the threads that haven't seen activity for a few months.... Race you to it, tomten!

Who to believe? i hesitate to post anything incase it encourages our resident coprophiliac. But I wont be going back to a porta potti anytime soon. I must admit I don't have experience of living with a pump out for any amount of time, so can't really comment on them.
