Went through Royal Oak swing bridge on the Macc yesterday. For those who don't know it it's an electric one, very very slow. I took my boat through, the bridge closed but the barriers that stop the cars crossing didn't rise. Next thing all the lights on the control panel went out and my key was retained. Cars then started turning round, some were doing dangerous reversing manoeuvres onto the main Leek to Macclesfield road which is very close to the bridge. A fellow boater who happened to be walking by rang CRT, they said they would come out urgently.
Half an hour later I'd turned maybe 20 cars round, no sign of CRT so I rang them. They said they had no knowledge of the breakdown but would send someone straight away, they would ring me back to let me know how long it would be. Another half an hour went by, nothing. I called again, told them that if someone didn't get here sharpish someone was going to get killed, it's not my job to manage traffic at a busy, dangerous junction. 10 minutes later still no call, I'd just spoken to a distressed nurse going to an emergency call and helped a bloke who had a trailer behind his van turn round by forcing open a rusty gate into a farmer's field when a CRT bloke turned up. No phone call, nothing. I wasn't best pleased, gave him a volley. He apologised, told me that head office told him not to call, just to go to the job.
What a shambles this organisation are. I had a follow up call half an hour later, I told them exactly that.

Yes, we know it! When Pirkko pressed the button three years ago and the barrier on the north side was coming down, a car came down the straight and accelerated and just missed having their roof scraped by the barrier. Which was a pity. We did meet someone (or heard the tale?) of a car that got trapped on the bridge and had to wait to be swung 90 degrees this way, and 90 degrees back before they could once again drive off. Red hot mooring pins in the eyes is too good for cretins like this.
In June we crossed 2 bridges on the L&L between Bingley and Keighley where the warning 'hydraulic oil level low' was showing. CRT obviously can't be bothered with routine maintenance. We have come across electric bridges that don't work, so that you have to press both buttons at the same time for (? 10) seconds to reset the system.
Still, there's £220,000 for Stuart's salary because he's doing such a good job!

It seems a bit odd in this day'n'age that highways infrastructure is the responsibility of the navigation authority.
Yet another argument for lengthsmen (or women) a person who patrols a certain area and also lives on a boat there. Someone who knows that bit of canal like the back of their hands.
they'd sort it and also probably prevent the problem in the first place by regular checking.
Lengths people to have dog options. A wild German Shepherd for to deal with the idiot motorists and a nice cuddly whippet cross for to entertain the walkers. Samosa fighting dog to dismount idiot psyclists.
Dogs to have own boat on own mooring.
