Haven't had a bike for years, but have messaged the seller to arrange to view this scooter/moped this week. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vespa-et2-50-cc-2001/312338964966?hash=item48b8da61e6:g:~y8AAOSws~pb~EBH:rk:1:pf:0Anyone know anything about them? Anything in particular to look out for/ be aware of? As I have a full car licence and passed the test in 1979 I presume I don't need a CBT or L plates, is this correct? The plan would be to restore it as a Winter project and get it road legal, then take it away on the boat over the Summer for shopping trips etc. It is heavy, around 100kg but I'm sure I can get it on and off the bow deck using a couple of planks.

I was going to suggest a proper scooter - Honda C90 but looking on eBay there are proper money!
The little wheel scooters are a little less stable on the road but a Vespa won’t be a bad choice - many thousands of mad Italians can’t be wrong!

I remember there was a Di Blasi folding moped advertised in waterways mags in the 90s.
Funny video of one here
You'd have to be a loony to ride one of them where there are cars about though.
I've always liked the Honda Melody myself and the C90. Never ridden either.
Eta I can't help thinking the C90 would be an excellent base for electric conversion. Not sure how that works on registration and insurance but there are some wicked high power brush less motors about to replace a dead IC engine or use a hub motor.

I've looked at the Honda C70/ C90 before but like you say, they are proper money- the knowledge boys use them for taxi route familiarisation training in London and that keeps the prices sky high. If I do get the Vespa I will de-restrict it- an easy job- so it will do 40-45mph. It should be fine for trips to the nearest shop (which might be five miles away so far too far to walk) and also just for a bit of fun. I reckon if I get it MOT'd and tidy it up I could double its value anyway.

Seller has replied and I'm going to have a look at it after work tomorrow. I see he’s just sold the wiring loom for exactly the same type of bike with a neutral review! Check it’s not been hotwired to run as he says it needs a new lock set.

So long as it starts and runs and the electrical system works then that will do, I will just fit a hidden ignition switch.

A friend of mine had a 3 speed Vespa 50 S when we were 16, he couldn’t kill it - no matter how hard it was ridden. Odd handling - the rear wheel is offset - you could scrape the floorboards though! Crap brakes. Slow. Well made. The last attribute almost made up for the other 3! BTW:- www.gov.uk/motorcycle-cbt/car-driving-licenceYou passed your driving test before 1 February 2001 You can ride a moped (up to 50cc) without L plates. You don’t need to take a CBT course or take the full moped test. You must take CBT if you want to ride anything larger than a 50cc moped.

I appreciate what you are saying, but I won't be using it for commuting, just for pottering to the nearest village store and back and even then only in Summer when the roads are dry. An important consideration is that I have to be able to stow the bike on the bow deck which pretty much rules out full sized motorcycles.

I saw Quadrophenia at the cinema when it came out, I've just bought a DVD of it on ebay, thanks. My boy will probably enjoy it next time he's up too.

Nah, mine isn't for sale. I went out to buy an engagement ring and came back with that scooter instead. It didn't go down well but we laugh about it now.
