I don't use planes so it won't affect me but it does seem rather ridiculous that a couple of drones can shut down a major airport like Gatwick. Surely airports have some sort of security for this type of thing? If not then it seems to be an extremely easy way to cause significant disruption. Can they not take drones down I would have though it would be pretty easy. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-46623754

Why don't they have 3 handheld directional scanners? Track the base unit. Job sorted.

Maybe the drones are pre programmable and do not need a controller.

A decent shot with a 12 bore would work Phil

Maybe the drones are pre programmable and do not need a controller. That's doubtful because they have beèn popping up and down through the night just to wind the authorities up Mind you for ultimate agro pre programming would be the way to go Phil

I’m pretty sure ‘the powers that be’ would like a good excuse to make drones illegal. When you think about it, they are potentially a very effective personal threat.
Anyone seen this?
...and you thought spotty teenage trolls can only do damage on an Internet forum from their bedroom....

Presumably they keep landing then to change to batteries, I presume the batteries can’t last that long in these things.

So are we saying that they can’t find out where they are landing to change the batteries, yet know they are there to the point they can shut an international airport down? Maybe there are a number of them, when one runs out of battery power, another takes off? Maybe they are breeding?

Just fit the planes with a big net at the front - how hard could that be?

Just fit the planes with a big net at the front - how hard could that be? You can buy jammers which take out the control signals for these drones. It probably wouldn’t take much to retune them again though.

I'd not like to see drones banned, as there have been some nice canal shots made with them, such as:

Drones have been used to release hand grenades previously. It seems enormously probable that someone will at some stage attempt to take down an aircraft during takeoff or landing phase. This could just be preliminary exercises to test the water regarding the feasibility of such an attack.
Or they needed to close airport runway for another reason and this was found to be a useful excuse.
Drones with autopilot are available.

Why don't they have 3 handheld directional scanners? Track the base unit. Job sorted. If they are using legit frequencies, chances are there are lots of other devices using the same ones, so too much 'noise'. If they aren't using legit frequencies, what what would they look for?
