Hello greenman, as many others have said already, welcome on TB. I've always been attracted to the Scottish countryside, and made the stupid mistake quite a few years ago without doing any research about the midget, to go on my motorbike to explore during the first 2 weeks of august, which worked out to be a BIG mistake. One way or another the midgets families must have been informed about me coming over, as they were all waiting for my arrival, so after only 1 night I decided that I didn't want to take more risks (wimp !) and drove quickly to the South again, before going back to France. I would still very much like to go another time, without telling anyone about it, to avoid that they could tell the midgets, just to visit the Caledonian canal and see the VIC 32. Peter. Midge factor varies quite a bit year on year. This year, hardly noticed them due to the cold spring and hot dry summer, neither of which they like. No doubt they will back next year, so avoid July to early September! Of course midges arenβt a problem when itβs windy, which is most of the time in Scotland! Yes Nick, I know now that I picked the wrong time, if I'd done only a bit of researche I could have known then already, but it just got to me, and I thought at the time : "Why not going for a nice bike tour to Scotland ?" Next time (if there'll be a next time) I will definitely go in a better period of the year. Peter.

It did make me smile that peter bargemast calls them "midgets" Happy to know I made you smile with calling these lovely beasts "midgets". Smiling and laughing are good for your health. Peter.

We all knew what you meant, the dwarf liberation front will be round at your door. Just sweep them away with a broom.

In case you don't remember, I'm Dutch, so it will take a lot more to scare me . Something else you probably didn't know about me, I am very much for egal rights to everybody that deserves it, independent of their physical size, colour of their skin, race or gender. Peter.

Jim, you sound like someone I don't believe you are at all, which is a cruel man. Peter. but he is Peter, have you seen the jokes he makes people read !!! I don't believe he is at all John, also he can never "make people read" his jokes, as we can make that choice ourselfs. That's one of the few freedoms we still have left, as most of our previous freedoms have turned into obligations. This is one of the reasons that I'm happy not to be a teen-ager in the time we're living in now. Peter.

Yes welcome indeed, I remember the canal when it was being brought back into service, moored next to a section in my lorry, and had a grand walk along it in the evening. I then went back just before the Kelpies were opened fantastic to say the least and the wheel well what can I say, brilliant and made in Ripley, just down the road from us in Chesterfield, made me feel right at home! I never knew that Ripley of all places! Lived in Chesterfield for 25 years before we took 5 years out to play with boats. Ended up in darkest Oxfordshire, not a bad place but a bit flat and boring for a lad who grew up with the Peak District on his doorstep. Only been back a couple of times! Boy has it changed.

Snow White didn't know what Seven Up was until she met the Dwarves. Were they agents for Dr Pepper?

I'd spend the entire summer on the west coast if I could sit and watch swarms of midgets
