It's Sunday morning and the bells are ringing out near where we are moored. I quite like them but the OH is not impressed. Many years ago I used to go to the odd church service. Weirdly I enjoyed the sermons the most. Maybe it appealed to the pub philosopher in me. Did anyone else here used to go to church then stop going? If so, what changed? For me, I think I realised that 'trying to be nice' is a 24/7 thing, not just 2 hours a week. One of my best mates was a C of E vicar. He had some interesting points of view. One was that the church is just the people, not the building. Also, he used to say he wasn't religious. It took me a while to realise that he meant that religion is different to having a faith. In this world where thousands die each year in the name of relgion, that kind of made some sense. Peace and love is the way forward, the hippies probably had it right until they got tripped out on drugs. Maybe we can't do peace and love on our own after all. End of sermon

I went to a school where church attendance was compulsory but started skiving (bunking off) at about age 11 when I realised that no one was checking. I had made my mind up about religion. But I still like the church bells when they are rung for a service. Ringing the changes (where they ring every possible sequence seems pointless, unmusical and very annoying - like listening to a noisy pigeon!

End of sermon The Hippies had it right Because of the drugs I can hear the bells at Great Linford as we speak, incredibly some people moor there because of the Bells. I went to Catholic Chapel as a kid,I think your life experience just simply outgrows it,that coupled with various associated scandals makes some question the relevance. Is there anything more sad than the present schism in the Anglican Church as it struggles to be all things to all men and ends up only diluting the relevance of any message it may have.

I'm a bellringer In Castleton, Derbyshire now and there's a notice in the church saying there's no ringing team currently. What a waste of 8 bells! What's wrong with the people if Castleton? Bassy - start ringing and have some fun. If nothing else it annoys the villagers.

I did Bob Minor Monday before last in Chirk, and rang in Hexham Abbey about 3 weeks ago. Heptonstall at Christmas. Last Summer Halifax, Huddersfield, Brighouse and Armitage Bridge.
Two quarter peals I've done - Clavering and Great Parndon.

BP
How much would it cost to go up in a glider as a passenger? There's a gliding club near Yelvertoft. Are there many two-seaters about?

BP How much would it cost to go up in a glider as a passenger? There's a gliding club near Yelvertoft. Are there many two-seaters about? It's getting on for about £100 down South for a short flight plus briefing. Lots of 2 seaters around. I'd recommend a days course though. It might be more like £200, but you're more likely to get some decent flying in and get a feel as to what it's all about. Gliding has more of a club feel about it than powered flight as a big part of flying gliders is helping others get off the ground. Make sure you book a day where there are lots of little puffy white clouds for a long flight!

@bp thanks. Actually, it would be a jolly for my wife. I was once a PPL and did one glider flight near Brum. It was £40 an hour back then! The glider I flew had no radio but lots of masking tape!!!

Ha ha...it was probably there to cover the gaps and edges to make it fly for longer (reduce drag). I rarely used the radio except sometimes when taking off when nobody was in the mobile tower. I'm sure you'd both enjoy a day on the field.

In answer to the OP, I read this on Facebook today and really liked it...
"The origin of christianity was a lie to cover up an affair and it simply got out of hand"

"The origin of christianity was a lie to cover up an affair and it simply got out of hand" I'm not sure which question you are trying to answer there. Regarding the quote, I think the key word is 'origin'. Is there any evidence for it?
