Will be interesting to see pictures. A couple of nice old Thames lighters (upriver type which are much prettier than the downriver type) came on the cut here a couple of years ago. I wonder if its them converted. I always rather fancied converting one of those.
Or might be something else entirely.

Waiting for images of boats to upload.
Currently charging the new batteries via stater alternator and all seems well (the old batteries were most definitely shagged - new ones hardly dropped anything overnight compared to the old ones which would be as flat as a pancake in the morning) Today will be spent largely calming myself and charging the new batteries along with staying warm.
Any thoughts on what I need to test to confirm the problem lies with the domestic alternator - also where/what how to buy a new one (correct one)?

Not sure if its been mentioned already but was the charge light glowing? If it glows but dimmer than the initial level on starting the engine it could be the diodes. Probably worth getting it off and taking it to a man for testing. Or read the label and buy a generic replacement on eBay.
It was a shire engine but I would personally not look at buying an alt from Barrus because they will just put a markup on it and it will be a generally available unit anyway.
If its a big one it might be quite expensive so could be worthwhile getting it tested.

My understanding is that I need one capable of charging at higher volts than the current one, regulator on current one only allows 14.4v and despite phoning around I couldn't find a replacement that allowed more - this is going from memory so will check to see if I'm correct with the v's.

As Andrew said take it off and get it tested. You need to find a good auto electricians place, they do still exist. So best not take it off until you've found out where to take it. Get it fixed if it can be fixed, if not buy a generic one rather than one badged barius. As before take photos of the cable connections before disconnecting.

Somewhere abouts on here are those regs @loddon and I recommend. Get your alternator off to a local motor factors who offers testing and repair, if it's repairable get them to do it with the brush/reg pack we recommend. If it's more terminal get them to sharpen their pencil and supply new, you can then check the new ones output and possibly change the reg at a later date. I take it your alternator b+ cables go to their respective batteries or do you have a split charge relay somewhere abouts?

Thanks all.
Couple of pics of the barges I mentioned earlier, no idea how interesting they are but I liked them.

Steel replicas. Despite it being local to me I have never been up the Lee or Stort rivers. Well once I reached Tottenham but was attacked while cruising along minding my own business by scum who needed killing in a way I have never experienced before. That's despite previously going through Birmingham, Leicester and other places "known" for nasty incidents. This was different. Animals. If I had had a gun at the time I would be in jail now. sadly it has put me off the area completely So any pictures of interesting boats up that way are welcome on here as far as I'm concerned

Are there many full size steel replica Thames sailing barges? The only thing I don't like are the Windows below the gunnels

Maybe if donkey can find name or CRT number we can discover more about the boats.

Renaissance and Judith. OK more checks needed Eta nothing seems likely on the boat list so possibly not licensed or maybe houseboats are not shown ?

They must cost a fortune to have built, well if they are true to the lines of the wooden boats that is.
