If it is the type I think he is talking about, It's a voltmeter with an odd scale .... the lowest reading is about 10.5 volts and full scale is about 15 volts and the scale is coloured red/amber/green representing state of charge. I have a Faria meter like this on Shapfell. It gives a fairly crude but still useful indication of the battery state. I am sure if this is wrong Jubjub will correct

Yes, that's what I thought, just clarifying for others.

I am a complete non techie, bit of a Luddite really but I think you are right......shall I leave the room now? why ? ...... guess I described the right thing. There are quite a few "non techies" on the site and all of us have some areas where we aren't experts. I can hold my own in the electrical field but I feel a total incompetent when I look at Gazza's engineering or Faffers fitouts

......shall I leave the room now? Not at all - you could take a picture of the thingy and post it on here. And don't forget, if you get to know people on TB, you'll have contacts all over the country, always useful if you need some help or company. We are not really nasty, just sarcastic in a humorous way. Our boat apparently had solar panel(s) and we were left with a device which showed a green light if batteries OK, yellow light if needed a top up, red as a warning. We never understood it, often the yellow was flashing when the batteries were obviously fully charged, and it worried us. I had meant to remove the whole unit and chuck it in the canal dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way, but kris had a look at it and inadvertently he (or me) screwed the cover back on upside down, so now we can't see any lights at all. Problem solved.

Probably me, yes. Pirkko keeps a potted plant on top of it now, so it serves a purpose.

Well thanks... If I knew how to load a photo I would...but looking at the dial again it it has the following markings E 1/4 1/2 3/4 F with coloured boxes below then below them it has 25 50 75 then a % sign above a tiny diagram of a battery and then CHARGE. By the way if you are worried about meeting me on the canal my partner steers the boat!!

As for your gauge, they are good enough to let you know roughly whatβs going on, why people spend a fortune on battery monitors I never know - as long as the start battery has enough wind in it to whirl the enogine over thatβs good enough for me! Being a volt and amp hypochondriac is not something I think all that healthy π
Sadly I donβt have space in the dash to take it off your hands, I have recently ditched my Faria volt meter for a Turbo Boost gauge ππ

Yes, that's what I thought, just clarifying for others. Clarifying:- This is butter from which all milk solids has been removed. The result is a clear yellow fat that can be heated to a higher temperature than butter before burning. A similar product is Used in indian cookery called Ghee, a world without curry would be a shit place indeed π§ So, what has clarifying others got to do with a state of discharge meter??? π€
