Well done you.
I accept all you say about a boater who has no phone or means of e mail, and was unable for whatever reason to pick up a hard copy of the stoppage lists, or chat with other boaters on the relevant waterway.
Your sign will help them greatly.
Out of interest, which canal and lock are you speaking of?

I have to say that anyone who chooses to boat in winter and pays no heed to the published stoppage lists deserves to be stuck at a lock. And I say the canals should be open all year round. How would we like it if sections of motorways or A roads were closed for ... how many months? A stoppage should be an emergency or rare measure, not ten a penny.

We could bring back lengthsmen. As well as sorting out vegetation and checking for leaks, they could make sure boaters in their locality are updated with the latest info, ....no forget that idea. we’ve moved on to much more efficient and expensive ways of doing things now.

Your partner's doubts are well founded, . . by no stretch of anyone's imagination can C&RT be rightfully described as a navigation authority. They are a joke, but alas, a very unfunny one! I'm not even sure that this so-called charitable trust is run and staffed by human beings. All the indications point to it being an organization created, operated and staffed by alien life-forms from another galaxy or universe that have transmuted into something resembling human form. Their precise intentions are not yet 100% clear, but I think it's safe to assume that they're some sort of inter-galactic fifth column sent to cause disruption and confusion ahead of the main invasion force. Have you been talking to David Icke again Tony? No, certainly not, . . all conclusions have been arrived at only as a result of direct communication with and careful assessment of the life-forms that have been running C&RT since inception !

"Day one and my quest has proved more difficult than I could possibly of imagined. My skill of the written word is wanting at best and I still haven't decided what font to use....
I like comic sans, as I find it friendly and approachable but the message needs to be clear and precise dam it! Should I use a more formal font? What would CRT think of comic sans being used on waterways? But I don't want to be confused with them - OH WHY DIDN'T I WRITE MORE SIGNS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER INSTEAD OF GOING TO ALL THOSE ROCK CONCERTS?! WHY? WHY? WHY?
Oh this is indeed a treacherous path I have chosen....
Meanwhile, the printer smirks at me laughing at my endeavours and savouring every moment up until I will press the print button - he knows something...."

You should have got the notices printed out before blabbing about it on here ! Perhaps you didn't realize that C&RT's starship 'Stasi' monitor what's being said about them on internet forums, and have the ability to remotely manipulate and interfere with any and all forms of earthbound communications. They got CWDF all sewn-up and under their complete control long ago, and they've now also infiltrated other forums, including this one.

Suppose there is an argument their behind with the upkeep been just putting a plaster on a lot things though...? I would expect when the canals were used commercially repairs would have been done as and when and things like lock gates would have been a few days at the most rather than taking half the winter. Parts of locks are items subject to wear. They will have a fairly predictable lifespan so you replace before failure. Now they (knackered paddles is a classic example) are just chained up leaving just one paddle. Once that one fails nothing doing at all. Its sad really. The whole point of having two paddles is redundancy. They didn't put two paddles there for a giggle it is part of the design. Obviously it admits more water but it also means you can operate the lock if a paddle fails as long as it fails closed.
