But at what price Andrew? if diesel is a fortune a litre what price electric then. Thats the issue for me I am happy doing 2 hours a day then charging through solar if needed, and given that its supposed to get hotter rather than colder, I am safe for the future People always talk about oil prices going up continuously but if you look at the data crude oil is cheaper now than it was in 1980. www.macrotrends.net/1369/crude-oil-price-history-chart So who knows it might be even cheaper in 2048... and well made diesel engines will still be runnning (other than foxy's Bukh which will succumb to excess oil changes and cleaning with toothbrushes). I know this excludes taxes and potential legal action so yes diesel may become considerably more expensive but it would really have to go through the roof to make electric viable. I mean in large scale not individual home built projects. Oil is just far too expensive and dirty to survive Sorted that for you Andrew
Johnathon Wilsons next five boats are electric which for me shows which way things are going to go

huge step into the unknown ...... my hat's off to you Enormous investment in time, money and skull sweat ...... so pleased to hear that it is going so well When I put it back together you will have to have a trip out, even if its a short one John, I am also putting in the steering wheel as well, to finish the job off

Congratulations on achieving your goal.
We met a guy in 2012 who'd taken a year off to cruise from Brinklow down to the K&A.
An electric powered grp cruiser, working on solar to charge.
We met him tied up at Reading, waiting to get some charge to get through the Oracle (ended up being towed through).
I can't imagine anybody will be continuous cruising exclusively by electric for a long time, which I think is the point mm was making.
I actually quite like diesel engines, in the same way that I love narrows rather than wide beams.

Peter, I had no doubts that your project would be a success, certainly stuffed it to the neersayers at the other place though they will still be stuttering into their ale. Phil

Actually, now I think about it, the other place is teeming with neersayers, still many unconvinced that solar works, still many that don't believe you can live on a boat and have a 12v fridge and 12v freezer or a washing machine or tumble dryer, the other day somebody was convinced that switching to LED lighting was a waste of time and money Phil

Like you I cruise for maybe 9 months of the year. Solar cant be relied upon. As for charging points, well, how many of those do you see? I want to be able to wake up early some days, turn key and cruise. Some days for ten hours, electric wonβt do for me yet. I am sure something other than oil, will one day work for all though. Not sure it will be electric though.

I am a little weird, I accept, but I prefer steam engines to modern electric trains, I like the quirkiness of narrow boats compared with the more comfortable wide beams, and I like the background noise of a diesel when I'm cruising.
I wonder if, when electric drive is all the rage, they'll have artificial engine noise as an option, like they have artificial shutter sounds on digital cameras?
