You knew you would get stick Nick. But I think you did right. I'd have moved him Rog Yes of course. Thanks That would have been an assault. Could certainly have developed into such, and not worth it over such a minor irritant. However it is easy to become embroiled in escalations Rog

All our volockies have been OK apart from that stupid woman at Fradley Jcn who opened the paddles too quickly when we were down in the lock, making me crash into the top gates. I said angrily to her that's what happens when you open both paddles too quickly. She replied the boat that wanted to come down was in a hurry. Let's hope something nasty has happened to her.

So far I have yet to meet volockies, and to be honest I am not looking forward to it. I expect I will come across them when I bring Shapfell North through the ditches. I don't want any help operating locks .... I like to do it myself at my own pace ..... It's part of the enjoyment of canal boating ... the only time help is nice is when it's very busy and people are waiting ... but to be honest being in a small boat means I usually manage to share with someone (often jumping part of the queue that way )

They're actually great and do loads of terrific work, cutting back foliage, repairs and painting/tidying.
The lock volunteers are for the most part terrific, and ask if assistance is required before getting involved.
They do get a lot of stick, and as you know, everyone has their own version of how best to operate a lock.
My one major spat came at Watford locks when we were directed (going down) to wait for three boats coming up.
No problems, kettle on for Jane whilst I took a windlass to help the three up.
All good and in our turn we set off down.
However, a boat had entered at the bottom, unannounced, and rather than make that boat reverse, they told me to wait in the pound.
Further boats arrived so it was felt best to let them up too, and I could just wait.
There was then something of a brief but heated exchange of views.
Eventually the locky came back and apologized, saying he was new and had just lost control.
I was okay with that, we weren't in a rush, I was just irked that I was 'punished' rather than the boat who 'broke the rules'.
One of the other lockies however, took real umbrage with me, threatening to report me to C&RT and have my licence revoked.
Happy days.

The thing to remember about volunteers is they cost £32/hr You do seem to forget that much of that would be a cost regardless if they are paid employees or not, hr services, training, equipment and managing costs. I suspect it's still better value overall and definatly needed. The couple on the boat next to us in the marina volunteer on caen hill. During the winter they are painting, clearing rubbish, picking litter and gardening all stuff that either would not get done or be at a higher cost from subbies. Although I am intrigued as much as you at whybits costs so much for the volunteers. I've never met a bad one. We last got help down caen hill which was handy as the crew were tucked up in bed Ill, I told myself off for not making them a cuppa and I am determined to always do so if helped again.
