We're up for blacking this June - and a look at our anodes - and possibly/probably a hull survey (again - last time July 2016) (insurance company wants one every 5 years, before Summer 2021 in our case). Anyone know of hull surveyors around Penkridge? Kitchen tap(s), electrician, blacking in june possibly needing new anodes plus a survey, and of course another oil- and filter change, wouldn't it be cheaper to get yourself another boat ? With all the things that are needed on yours, it's almost a complete rebuild . Peter.

The anodes were put on July 2016, I reckon they're still OK, or I might sand them to expose fresh metal. I think we are still on top of this all, but a lot of effort has gone into making what we have today. I'm expecting our Summer trip to be plain sailing; it's going to be a long trip. I should change the fuel filters (2) myself - not done that before - and perhaps the water pump impeller. Can't think of anything else that needs doing.

They're made of Neoprene and when they've been in service for a good while the vanes tend to crack and fall off due to the constant flexing, . . and they always do it at the most inconvenient moment. If you've had two or three years out of the existing impeller, then fit a new one and keep the old one as a stand-by spare. Old used/worn ones with a permanent slight 'set' to the vanes are easier/quicker to fit, especially when you're drifting towards a weir, but they must also be re-fitted the same way round as before so as not to over stress and bend the vanes the other way when, or if, they're put back into service.

I put the last impeller in last June. The previous one had done 3 years. I inspected the vanes of the old impeller and one vane had a crack, exposed when vane bent over. Silicone grease, not vaseline, when stick the new impeller in. We have a new spare, but it seems to be 'rougher made' than the Bukh impeller. Intending to pick up 2 or 3 new Bukh impellers this June, from TW in Furness Vale. I also changed all of the coolant (pink). I always keep an eye on the water temperature guage. Our engine doesn't 'eat' any coolant at all, never need to top of the header tank. Quite happy with our water system for now.

I would be surprised if the "Buhk" impeller really is a Bukh impeller, as it's more likely to have been made by Jabsco or Johnson, and only put into a Bukh box to sell it for twice the price. But who cares about paying more for a quality product ? Peter.

Come on Foxy, even this daft old bat manages that! Seriously, with your rate of oil and filter changes, I'm surprised you haven't done that. Met x

Come on Foxy, even this daft old bat manages that! It's not so simple in our case. No, I have seen it done twice, and in different ways. Sort of thing I'd normally consider easy-peasy, but I haven't done it myself and don't want to break anything or have diesel all over our nice clean engine 'ole floor. I will investigate when I get round to it (early June). No rush, no apparent fuel problems, and filters could well be quite clean inside, still.

First rule - turn the fuel off β¦ you will still lose up to a precious litre but you can catch that to save the engine 'oleβ¦..

What day is it?
We had world book day and international women's day but I'm unaware of what day it has been today.
