No I think this one is his barge. He also has a splitter which as far as I know has a Lynch motor. Like I said I don't know much about it But I think you will find I am right ! Eta Yanmar/Barrus unit replaced.

I'm not that familiar with peterboat vessel but if I remember right it is something like 57x12ft modern English barge possibly built by Tyler Wilson?
So would be reasonable to assume it has a fairly ordinary swim ie similar to that of a narrow boat but on a wider vessel. I find the performance characteristics very encouraging. I guess the problem is that on canals you have to satisfy other people and its not really that convenient to crawl along at 3mph. Would be interesting to see the range at higher speeds. Its a great project, one I would love to have a go at myself but I am loathe to haul the diesel out. Despite being the world no.1 fan of electric I don't think its there yet. Typo edit You are right Andrew its the big boat, it does have a very good swim though its right into the living quarters so maybe 11 foot long? maybe longer. I have to say I am very pleased with the result apart from an annoying squeak that develops after an hour or so but goes after a short rest cant work out where its coming from but it doesnt seem to bother the running

Well I set off this morning at 0900 and moored up at Sheffield basin at 1430 ish, I have done a lot of locks on Tinsley flight and had half an hour for lunch, I set off with batteries at 97% and have arrived with them at 76 %, The sun is shining brightly here and putting in !kw at the moment. The batteries are back up to 79% and I expect them to be charged by tonight, for me my electric boat is a success, between yesterday and today I would have used maybe 25 litres of diesel, whereas I have used none whatsoever. When the rotary switch finally turns up, I will be able to switch all my panels between domestic and drive, so my range will with luck be increased by a third, so long may the sun shine

Right after I finished charging today I can say that I used 8.2KW to make the jouney from Rotherham to Sheffield, not bad in the way of the world is it?

Great figures Peter, not only is the energy you are using free but you are also using it far more efficiently

Maybe its me being more careful of driving the boat? Whatever happens I am enjoying this method of powering the boat and with luck my switches will arrive shortly and I will be able to put more solar to drive, domestic use or heating the immersion heater

Well back on my mooring, its been a trouble free trip apart from an annoying whine from either the motor or the controller, it starts after about 20 mins stops if I cut power and comes back on again after maybe 30 seconds. I have turned of the solar so that the batteries are sat at 60 odd% as I dont need them for a while, I will have to have a go at diagnosing the issue before the next run, as the warranty runs out on the controller in June. For me this project has been a success as it ticks all the boxes
