Yes indeed. If I remember correctly doesnβt the bible speak of a false messiah before the second coming? I also seem to remember the Jews donβt recognise the first coming, so itβs all a bit confusing really.

Β I lived in a predominantly Irish Catholic area and Sunday the huge Catholic church would be bursting at the seams ..............How long ago was that?Β Β I'll bet that doesn't happen these days - in Ireland the percentage of church-goers has recently dropped like a stone.Β The high proportion of kiddy-fiddlers in the clergy is just part of the disillusionment. Even now in the highlands and islands the churchs are packed on a Sunday.

I don't even know what a 'fundamentalist' is but I see the words 'mental' and 'fumbling'.

I don't even know what a 'fundamentalist' is but I see the words 'mental' and 'fumbling'. ask Dubya - he is the expert at christian pork pies. .............. if a thicko can ever be described as an expert. Homo Deus is a thick and stodgy volume, but I have just read the chapter on how various 'holy scriptures' came about in all 3 abrahamic religions - stories and political wish lists nicely woven into fairy tales for the otherwise uninformed masses.

in the 70's I made quite a few visits to Southern States. I remember being gobsmacked by the way many could totally ignore the hard won scientific explanations for the history of the world .... to them it was all fake news, the only truth was "The holy book"
Unbelievable how people can be so blinkered by what they have been told and how unable they are to look and think for themselves ..... quite frightening

Itβs for us as individuals to find the good. Wouldnβt it be rubbish if the freedom to do that was taken away from us. Some scientists and religious freaks try to do that sadly.

err ....... the thing is that these fundamentalists are incapable of using their discretion to filter out the good messages in the various holy scriptures. Instead they allow concepts that are thousands of years old, and which have no place in the 21st century, rule their actions and cause them to hate and seek retribution from others for imagined insults and 'sins' against their own version of the truth. There is no good in that, not an iota. The likes of Dubya are potentially as dangerous as ISIS.

However I do agree that religion (and science) has been used by some to suck those things from our soul in the name of greed and selfishness. Itβs also fundamentally a weakness in the interpretation of words. Words are just a tool. Itβs what we DO as individuals which really counts.
