Have been thinking of daring to unwrap the lagging/wrapping from around our exhaust pipe and silencer this Summer, never having done that before, just to see how knackered they are. What is this covering called, and where does one buy more of it in case I want to make it all look nicer? And if, for instance, the silencer looks like it might need replacing (how can I tell?), from where does one buy new silencers for narrowboats? Just musing for now. I want to spend a day or two just sitting in the engine 'ole this Summer looking at what we've got, and tidying anything up that looks like it might need it, and trying to work out what all those electric cables do. This is what we have (old photo by the way, some improvements already made):

I think this is a case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". And in any event it's difficult to see how knackered it is because they rot from the inside out. Exhaust systems on diesel engines last for ages though. I'm guessing the silencer will be some type of automotive part.

When u start to unpeel an onion the many layers reveal rot within... bit like renovating an old mining cottage.......

But I'm an interfering old sod and like to have a poke about, and I am curious to find out that if we did put a new silencer on, would it be quieter...

If you really can't think of anything more useful and less time and money wasting to do, then do it. Unwrap all the insulating stuff, and check your silencer (waste of time), which is quite likely to be in great shape anyway. Then wrap the whole lot in this insulating covering bandage and forget about it for the rest of your life. In your case, it's likely you'll do it again a week later while waiting for the engine-oil to drain. If you need a new silencer, the thieving hounds of the chandlers will happily sell you one, or check the ones at ASAP www.asap-supplies.com/exhaust/dry-exhaust-silencers-accessories/exhaust-silencers as the may be cheaper (but could have been made by slimy Indians) In case your exhaust noice is too much (hard to imagine with a single pot 10Hp Bukh) get yourself a hospital silencer. Peter.

If it helps, the wrapping is fibreglass bandage. Used to be Asbestos but no more for obvious reasons. Phil
Oh Foxy on your next jaunt to the Fens you may like to consider a bit of bell ringing at the church in Isleham outside which you parked.

Oh Foxy on your next jaunt to the Fens you may like to consider a bit of bell ringing at the church in Isleham outside which you parked. Think I'll just stay 'logged in' to TB today. Isleham, Cambs, S Andrew, 6, 18-2-1 (940kg) in E. Tuning: 2-7 of 12. Fri ( dove.cccbr.org.uk/doveParts.php?letter=I ) Yes, could try Isleham church. We don't have any kind of plan how to deal with the Fens in 2 years' time. Looking at the map we could make for the River Lark first and use that as a base. But this is a subject I don't want to think about yet, but save it for the winter/spring after next, something new to plan then when it's boring at work. This Summer's trip and what to do next October and next Christmas is enough for now.

Peter. Peter wins the internet - saved an enormous amount of typing (or ctrl c ctrl v if you like!) Ross, stick to changing the oil every other day, you will know when the exhaust needs looking at - you won't need to peel the wrap off to get an idea it's past it's sell by date
