Apparently it's 'Earth Hour' and the Witch has turned off all the lights in the house and has lit several candles. I thought I'd spend some of this hour researching 'Earth Hour':
" Why earth hour is a load of bollocks!
This year, earth hour is 30th March and again we will not be participating. What a load of bollocks!
If you are participating this year, ask yourself why?
What are you doing for the other 23 hours of the day on the 29th to save power, reduce emissions and waste?
What about the other 167 hours that week, or the other 8764 hours of 2019?
This isn’t something that can be fixed in an hour. This is something that every single person on the planet needs to be doing every hour of every single day.
Whether you “believe” in climate change or not, I think we can all agree that pollution is terrible and natural resources are being used at an alarming rate.
So what are you doing about it? Forget government, they are a bunch of useless fuckwits. But you, reader, have the power in your hands to actually do something about it – to reduce your impact on the planet.
Change starts with you, right now, right here. Do something about it! "

so all those environmentally friendly cities turn off their floodlights for an hour. when I was a kid there was no floodlighting and very few roads were lit all night in cities, let alone main roads across the country. if the cities were serious they would turn off the lights once and for all, not just for a token hour, except where public safety is involved.

When I was in Southend-on-Sea last, I noticed that not only have they been removing the old SOX lights and replacing them with LED versions but also, in the early hours only selected fittings remain on, the rest go off. At a rough guess dropping the load by at least 75%

Yet mummies pick their little darlings up from school in these nowadays: I also pointed out to Pirkko that the manufacture of candles and the heat they produce / energy they give off is probably more than a 40W light bulb. Still, it helps people to pretend they've "done something for the planet."
