I bought three bags of this today because it was all they had. £8.50 per 20kg bag, which is fair to middling I suppose. I've never heard of "semi-smokeless" coal before, anyone used it? How does it burn?

Half of the nuggets are smoky, half are smokeless, hence the semi-smokeless tag. Meanwhile in China:

The bag looks like the stuff from Home Bargains, £3.99 for 10KG. I hope for your sake it isn't, because it's shite. Smokeless, maybe; heatless, yes; tons of ash, yes.

HB sell Brazier I think. At least they used to but they may have changed to a different product.
I've heated my barge in winter 24/7 on Brazier (authorised smoke less fuel) for the last 5 years. Its fine but yes it does have a lot of unburnt waste. Not exactly "ash" as such I think it's non combustible filler and binder.
Actually I think Home bargains might have changed to another product.
I buy Brazier in 10kg bags direct from CPL distribution (coals2u).
The main reason I use it is that I dislike 25kg bags. The 10kg are so much nicer to handle.

Well, I started burning this today and it truly is disgusting stuff. The photo below (which was taken after it had been alight for some 45 minutes) doesn't really convey the sheer horror of it. Acrid yellow smoke belching out of the chimney, steering the boat I felt like Hymie Rosenburg on a day trip to Auschwitz. I really don't know why a BWML marina would actually sell this shit. On the plus side, it does seem to burn very hot but I wouldn't buy it through choice again.
